Absolute shithole of a place, only one or two steps up from Western Africa in terms of social cohesion, but probably worse when it comes to corruption.

I think I read somewhere that Russia has a plethora of dash cams because of the way their insurance works.   I'm sure if we had a lot of people driving around with cameras we'd have lots of cool video too.

I've had a dashcam for a few months now, and aside from a few people driving like dickheads there's very little of any entertainment value to be seen. 


Russia, on the other hand, is an interesting place to drive.  Dead stop in traffic at 5:30 in Moscow, people just start driving along the sidewalk.  And not carefully.  They'll tear along the sidewalk like it's their own private lane. The first few times I saw it I was all, "What in the name of fuck?"  but after the hundredth time you see an Eastern European jalopy hurtle past you on the sidewalk, as Muscovites dive for safety, it starts to lose that magical appeal of the bizarre and unusual.


I genuinely believe that short of personally pissing off Vladimir Putin there's nothing you can't get away with in Russia, assuming you've got the cash to make the victim of your actions go to jail instead of you. 



I did once suggest that Russians might have slightly fewer accidents if they slowed down in cold, icy conditions.  This was met by me being told by a Russian, "No! Fuck you! We must drive fast all time! Very fast!" 


But the dashcam thing in Russia is because people realised they could get big compensation if they threw themselves onto the hood of a car that was either moving slowly or completely stopped. They would then roll around oy-ing and vey-ing, as though they'd been struck by a speeding vehicle.  Then they'd sue the car owner, or more likely the car owner's insurance company. 


Speaking as a Westerner with more cash than the average Russian has for bribing officials, I'm confident I could quite deliberately aim my vehicle at some dear old Babooshka, smash into her at 100kph, and drag her from one side of Moscow to the other, laughing maniacally and beeping my horn in time to her agonised screams... and for a 20 buck bribe to the cops, militia, or HOMOS that old lady is going to prison, my friend.
