A Lost Space Challenge...Another Ride Missed

We have missed our chance to ride on the Exploration Flight Test-1 of Orion as virtual crew members. 

The deadline and submission of all ideas for radiation shielding for the Orion spacecraftwas to be submitted by June 30, 2013. ( Kind of makes me wonder why they just can't use the shielding that was used for the Apollo-Saturn lunar missions?)

Also, isn't this capsule designed with an eventual Mars mission in mind?  [Edit:  well of course.. that's what you've been posting all along.]

It needs stronger shielding than than they needed... or at least thought they needed... back then.

The first interstellar space mission is going to be a lunar mission. I believe then it will be an asteroid or meteor after that; then off to Mars and beyond. So if they "REALLY" had the materials to travel to through the  Van Allen radiation belt then - doesn't mean that planet Earth should still have them now?

Yes, I do believe that it is. However, I haven't heard of any radiation encounters expected to exceed the intensity of the Van Allen radiation belt. Have you?

The Van Allen Belt isn't that big of a deal because the exposure time is so limited.  Once the spacecraft gets out of the protection of Earth's magnetic field, exposure to Solar Wind over weeks or months becomes a much larger problem.

I think they were just using aluminum shielding.  As you know every pound of extra weight needs a lot of extra fuel to get into orbit, so instead of adding a bunch more aluminum or whatever, I'm sure they would like something that makes a more efficient use of weight and space.

True but, that's the reason we have places like Area 51. It's my understanding that if we could develop a magnetosphere similar to that of a planet's, then we would then be able to deflect the Sun's solar winds. They would just bounce off of the craft like they do a planet.

It seems to me that they will have to develop and understand the alien technology that they currently possess at Area 51. They will have to learn how to overcome the limitations of gravity with that of antigravity.

The "radiation test" is simply to give the students something to study in their own classroom, not actual testing during EFT-1.
The main reason for EFT-1 on Dec 4, 2014 is to test the new heat shields. Orion will be boosted to approx. 20000 miles and re-enter at over 20,000mph.

I was posting the number of boarding passes that were issued / redeemed for the test flight of Orion. I am glad that the number of boarding passes didn't stop at a noticeable association with 19.5.  There were only about 1.3 million.


But along the way I made a number posts that referenced other programs at NASA and elsewhere, which includes all of the 2014 December flights / missions that have been scheduled through 2015 and what not.

whew! I'm already a space case. I want in on a center of the earth capsule so I can be well grounded.
