They picked her, and him, because they tried to use the Democratic playbook of identity politics. So they picked an old guy (get that senior vote) and a women (try to get the mom votes.) It clearly didn't work and they didn't properly vet the candidates (in particular Palin.) Sort of like how Obama became a candidate without being vetted but figuring (rightly so) that white guilt, the chance to "be a part of history," and his 1/2 black side would attract minority votes. But, unlike Obama, the press will investigate and vet Republicans. They were stupid to pick her (and I wasn't too impressed with McCain either.)

you're joking with this, right?  mccain's campaign was doomed until he chose palin, not because of her.  she was the only hope his campaign ever had of winning.  her inclusion marked the first and only time his prospects received a bump (other than the nomination).  i've never seen a single candidate as systematically attacked and vilified by the mainstream media as palin, and most of it i think was unfair.  some will disagree with me.  oh well.

to give a little insight as to my political predispositions here, i'm no palin fan.  in retrospect, i don't think she had any business being a heartbeat away from the presidency.  i've also gagged at the mere mention of mccain's name since 2000 and i chose not to vote in 2008.  however, your analysis of the closing weeks of the 2008 campaign couldn't be further off the mark, and i think your assertion is more the product of knee jerk ideology and group think than anything resembling fact.

of all the polls listed on that page from the 2008 election, obama led mccain in 270 of them (or 85% of the time).  in only 46 polls did mccain ever lead obama.  this pattern continued until sarah palin was announced as the VP candidate on 8/29/2008.  for three weeks after the announcement, the mccain campaign enjoyed a lead, tie, or statistical dead heat vs. obama in almost every poll through 9/21/2008.  this good fortune only ended when the "bush economy" hit the bricks and after the mainstream media had the time it needed in order to organize/calibrate/coordinate it's attack on palin (an effort which continues to this day).  aside from that palin bump, mccain was consistently trailing because the conservative base of the republican party didn't trust him or like him.  it's not hard to understand why, since mccain did nothing but thumb his nose at them for the prior eight years.  he never had a chance, and there's nothing in the grim story of those poll numbers to suggest he did.  i paid closer attention to that election than probably any other political event prior or since, and reading your quote above, it's as if you weren't watching the same election i was.

i'm glad mccain didn't win.  he's a big government neo-conservative "republican" for whom the constitution is merely a "living, breathing" annoyance.  in his mind, every unfortunate world event can and should be corrected through military action.  a mccain presidency would have resulted in an almost exponentially increased number of foreign military adventures coupled with an utterly unchecked expansion of the power of the pentagon (and a proportional expansion of its budget).  the obama government's tendency to spy on american citizens would look like child's play compared to the monster a mccain administration would unleash upon us.  mccain is everything you hated about bush x10.  i'd hate to imagine the republican party being defined by him for eight years.  i know i'll never be able to vote for democrats at a national level, but with a few changes i could start voting for republicans again.  a mccain presidency would have guaranteed i never vote in another presidential election.  for whom would i vote if he became the republican template?

TV , newspapers and most commercial radio news outlets are fighting over smaller audiences because of the net. Forums such as this are for many their means of getting 'news' and information. It's no coincidence the rise of and self agrandising activitives of conspiracy theorists has come about because of the net. It's largely annonymous, democratic and almost entirely devoid of accountability for facts, right of reply, fairness or scrutiny. There are some who still belive Saddam Hussain was behind 9/11 because in their bookmarks there is a site that says so..So it must be true eh?  Take some of the crap that is linked to on here that is regarded by some as empirical truth, and even when it's disected and shown to be bullshit, they still hang onto it being true 'because it's on the net'. The net has done many great things, but it's also removed critical thinking for many.
