Do You Believe In GOD

Started by ksm32, August 18, 2014, 08:21:04 PM

I have never blamed any god for the idiotic things people do in the name of religion.

There you go again.  Exactly whom are you trying to convince, and why?

Well you refuse to answer anything, and just make vague remarks.  I'll ignore you in this thread until you start explaining yourself.   Saying "it works for me" is not being christian.  You should be proselytizing as the bible tells you to.   Come on, share your "testimony."

You can say what you want about pedophiles, but at least they drive slowly around schools and playgrounds.

So true.

On a side note, have any of you ever watched "Jesus Camp?"

I lived in Texas.  They could rename the whole damn state Jesus Camp.

My sister's in-laws are from Texas. They're all Young Earth Creationists. It's almost impossible not to offend their religious sensibilities at some point.

Fair enough but still I've wondered why if there is a god they don't put a stop to it.

21,000 kids die every day from poverty and starvation. God is too busy helping Kanye West win the MTV Music award.

These comments about Texas are largely true. (With the unholy job-hunting migration from other States to Dallas alone approaching 10,000 new residents a month - not counting illegal newcomers - belief ratios are beginning to change a bit. But intrinsically, it is still Jesus and football. Together.)

I am sometimes well hated -  or "well loved" -  depending on their approach whim.

Sixteen years ago, on a hot July afternoon, I was wearing a DANZIG shirt, featuring Glenn Danzig being crucified while wearing a ram's head mask/hood. It's fair to say I was asking for it.

It was all white ink on black cloth. No other color. It actually looked pretty nifty in a Spinal Tap sort of way, mainly because of the impact of the mask.  If I recall, Glenn was tied, not nailed, to the TAU.

In the parking lot of an art supply store, where I was headed, an exiting customer passed me and from behind my back, I heard him say "Jesus loves you."

(he had waited until he was a good fifteen feet away)

By his inflection I knew I was being viewed with pity as a lost sheep and this was his best attempt at micro-witnessing as we passed each other. He used his most compassionate voice, similar to "There's snakes in that cave, mister."

I was unsure how to respond.

I summoned the most accurate Vincent Price cackle I could as I turned to look at him. And that's all I did.

The guy just stood there, looking me, absolutely horrified/terrified.

Then I went inside and purchased some opaque watercolors.

(But there are many "good" things/people in Texas, in my opinion. It varies greatly throughout the different regions. I've encountered individuals who after knowing me only a short while, would - and I mean this in a literal sense -  take a bullet for me. Which is good. Lots of guns around you see. Heh.)

I believe when we were primitive people, we looked up to the sky and began to wonder who made it. This eventually evolved  into a host of different gods, idols, and deities. We then began to use these Gods to submit and scare these people. Everyone thinks their God is the right one, so obviously a lot of us are wrong. I honestly think that believing in such a thing keeps us from evolving and developing to our true potential. But thats not to say that I don't respect peoples' beliefs, as long as they don't use said beliefs to hurt, scare, or keep people from thinking on their own.

Can anyone explain why this alleged God would be interested in believers converting others? If IT really wanted everyone to know about IT why didn't it just instill this information in them WHEN IT CREATED EVERYONE? And if there is no god what is there in the minds of believers that drives them to convert, to spread the word? god orno god  believers all over the world are certainly tenacious and driven.

He isn't.

He told me to tell you that you are confusing religion with the existence of a creator. Ricky Gervais is the poster child of confusing the two. Poor sap, he once was funny and then he found science.

He also said I should write it in shit on the wall but I skipped that step.

You mean there are revisions that aren't centered around a creator? Anyway I don't think I'm confusing The existence of God with religion, actually the question is about why are people motivated to convert others. Don't know how Ricky Jervay's got into this.
Anyone else?

That's a good question, and one I can't answer with certainty.  However, there have been plenty of dickish gods throughout history, so maybe as long as people worship and/or fear them sufficiently, they just don't care what their disciples do in their names.

You also don't know how you got here beyond Daddy putting his sperm in yo Mama but that doesn't stop you from breathing.

Wrong.  Mine  was an immaculate conception. And someone is high as a giraffe ass. :-)

He's not. I think conversion has a lot to do with bringing in more customers. More people/sinners that attend church, equals more revenue from Tithing. It's a business model.

Self validation is one motivator.

A dyslexic atheist who has insomnia,  will stay up all night wondering if there really is a dog. :)

Two words:

Multi-level marketing.

Sometimes I think the age-old conflict about which is the "true God" is like people arguing over what type of hat the invisible gnome in their closet is wearing.  "It's a Fedora!", "No it's a Beret!", "No it's a Fez!" ...
