The most recent computer I bot didn't include backup discs.  They thought I should go to the store, buy some discs, and do it myself. 

When I called about something else, I brought that up.  The tech said it was because the company was 'going green'.  After going back and forth over that, the fact that their customers had to use discs to do so anyway, and in fact many had to make a special trip to the store - and buy more discs than they actually needed - meant that overall it was LESS 'green'.

I made him agree that it was because his company was just plain cheap, that them telling him it was because they were green was a lie, and they didn't mind inconveniencing their customers.  Heh heh.

The tech support & customer service reps will tell you anything and everything. They mostly just make shit up just to keep you happy during the call. I've gotten different answers to the same question each time I've called. Century Link is one of the worst offenders in this regard. Infuriating!
