A patent for Palcohol has now been approved by the Treasury Department, reports Lehrman’s Beverage Law.

According to the product website, Palcohol is expected to launch this fall. Six versions are on tap to be released including a Vodka flavor that has been distilled four times, a plain rum powder, and four cocktail powers â€" Cosmopolitan, Mojito, Powderita (Margarita), and Lemon Drop. The site is even touting its potential as a condiment, right up there with salt, pepper, and a little Parmesan cheese. This is from their website, according to Lehrman:

"We’ve been talking about drinks so far. But we have found adding Palcohol to food is so much fun. Sprinkle Palcohol on almost any dish and give it an extra kick. Some of our favorites are the Kamikaze in guacamole, Rum on a BBQ sandwich, Cosmo on a salad and Vodka on eggs in the morning to start your day off right. Experiment. Palcohol is great on so many foods. Remember, you have to add Palcohol AFTER a dish is cooked as the alcohol will burn off if you cook with it…and that defeats the whole purpose."

The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved Palcohol for retail and it will be regulated the same as any other alcoholic beverage and be subject to similar licensing approval requirements.

Gawker initially reported that the brand’s website was promoting the idea of using the powder to discreetly get your alcohol fix on the cheap when attending a sports game, but the Palcohol website has taken down those references and replaced it with the following statement:

“Many media outlets copied some of that old verbiage about taking Palcohol into venues to avoid high drink prices,” the new site states. “But what they didn't include in their stories is that we mentioned on that same page, that you should check with the stadiums first to make sure they allow it.”

Palalcohol is also claiming that the labels featured on their old site are incorrect.

No word yet on pricing information but Palcohol says the product will likely be packaged in a single shot serving.

I was thinking about drinking and driving laws. Palcohol, I assume, is undetectable by a breathalyzer? Maybe this will make coordination field tests the determining factor in DWI arrests. I have always thought that is how it should be done, anyway. I rarely drink, so after one drink I should not drive, no matter if I would blow well below the legal limit. On the other hand, my good friend, Ralphy, is a very, very big boy and a long time alcoholic. He could probably blow a .1something and still be stone cold sober.

I could be wrong but I think any amount of alcohol in the blood stream can be detected upon exhale. It doesn't matter how the alcohol was consumed. By drinking or the strange method of an enema cocktail some idiots experiment with. The body tries to get rid of it, however it can. Through the kidneys or through the lungs by exhaling.

Edit: 5% of alcohol expelled through the lungs.

I didn't follow the link, but also thought it was a joke. I didn't major in chemistry but I don't think dehydration would keep any molecule of alcohol intact.

As it turns out, there is a way to encapsulate alcohol in cyclodextrines. Which appears to be a powder, whether it is actually a powder is really not all that important. Supposedly this can be nebulized.

This story is big. I was even considering starting drinking again! I was totally going to snort it, but whatever!

Apparently this has been patented and known about in the early 70's and I guess already marketed in Holland as a cheap way to make Alcopops. The more I searched the less impressed I am. Apparently the process surrounds the alcohol molecule with a sorta-sugar that traps the alcohol and so behaves as a dry powder. So, I guess, good for the stealth aspect and for price (depending how much they charge) but for making things like alcopops and sweet drinks. Yuck. It won't make you bourbon, whiskey, or even an unsweetened vodka, apparently.

A representative for the federal bureau said that the approval was made in error, though details were not provided about how the error occurred. Palcohol creator Mark Phillips was not available for comment, but agreed to surrender the approvals this afternoon. Phillips will likely re-evaluate the situation and try for approval on his labels again.
