Another Ft.Hood Shooting

news isn't yet clear on details but people are told to "shelter in place" on the base and surrounding neighborhoods. And unverified (witness) reports that several injured and one dead and that the suspect is a white male in a gray Toyota (I think that's the make they said). Unclear if only one shooter but news says "active shooter." I'm also not sure if related to those reports earlier this week about the military seeking a recruit who was planning some Ft.Hood terrorism/"work-place violence".

Yeah, it was sorted weird that that news didn't make more papers or channels. As I said, not sure if related. Suspect is called "white male" but these days the news will almost always say that. And white can mean hispanic also. And early info often changes. Same with shooters. Some reports say more than one shooter. We also have to keep in mind that some areas around the base are not the best, to say the least, and LOTS of gangs, crime, and corruption etc. And there is now even gang activity in the army itself with the recruitment changes.

I agree but only saying ill bet the anti-SSRI conspiracy crowd n guests will go on this. Having said that the press won't go with wtf we are doing to our military (and children) by multiple deployments, changing ROE, n giving pills of all sorts without much diagnosis or follow up. I dont claim that SSRIs, or Ritalin etc cause people to kill themselves (gee depressed folks take those SSRI drugs are already in trouble often or kill others.). I dont agree with Breggan or Alex cause those drugs have saved lots of people. But the overuse n no follow up is troubling.  Years ago I tried some ritalin at a party. Stayed up all night n was great but felt sick later. Guess what, almost as good as coke but not quite. Almost though. I can't believe its handed out like candy to kids. Not sure what SSRIs feel but I imagine people taking them should be for a reason n with doctors care. Not just write a scrip.

However it is not as simple as you seem to think Onan. Let us be very clear here; there are significant differences between Psychosis, depression and PTSD.

Psychosis is split into 2 differant types of symptoms - Positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms are so called as something is 'added' to a persons life - auditory or visual hallucinations (voices, visions, etc), delusional beliefs, thought disorders (thoughts becoming jumbled, or stopping suddenly) and possible generalised/targeted paranoia. Negative symptoms are when something has been 'taken' from a persons life - poor motivation, reduced self esteem, and potential low mood.

Depression is a lowering of the mood, normally following a significant event or series of life stressors. Stress (positive and negative stressers) in normal day to day life may also be the cause of hightened anxiety.

Suicide attempts can stem from both depression or psychosis. If a person is feeling hopeless and sees no future for themselves, or a chance of changing things for them then risk indicators would show them at a hightened chance of suicide.

PTSD is a very expensive diagnosis because in most cases it requires long term therapy. This destructive behaviour that played out at Fort Hood is not unique to the USA. Modern day armed forces around the world in all western countries are experiencing the exact same problems. Men and woman committing suicide. These people are not psychopaths. This is not an "I hate the world', or "If I can't have you then no one will" scenario. It is much more complex than that.

Although PTSD has been known by many other names (shellshock, ect.) and it has been around for a long time the Army does not have the medical capabilities to provide proper medical therapy and supervision. Because these soldiers have to be treated by a Psychiatrist (for the medication) and a Psychologist (for the cognitive behaviour therapy)not to mention the other general doctors involved, treating these patients is an endless money pit. This is one reason the Armed forces are hesitant to make a PTSD diagnosis. The other reason is that they just don't have enough qualified therapists to treat the numbers of cases.

This is not only a military problem and a problem that all of society must deal with. Unfortunately I don't see the military doing anything more than they are doing right now because in truth they can't solve and treat the problem themselves. It will take local and state and federal interventions and new health care policies. Until that happens the predictable result is that this type of event will repeat itself.

In the current political climate surrounding US health care, I don't see any changes happening any time soon.
