My point is the over use of PTSD via the Media. Every time a soldier commits a terrible crime they AND the media bring PTSD into the spotlight as to almost portray the act of war itself, the committer of the crime. A person commits the crime, then it should be seen for it's face value and nothing more.

I concur, 88M (Heavy wheel driver)  which along with a fueler is known to be IED magnets.
Now I know everyone's Primary MOS is 11b Infantry, but he was fully dressed in Infantry greens in the picture Foxnews just posted of him. Makes me wonder if he was reclassed, which from my memory the 88M and a cook are usually the 2 most common reclass MOSes.

It also says he was bothered by not having able to visit his mother's funeral in Puerto Rico, but instead given leave AFTER her funeral.
This was an issue I had with the Army as well. We got two promised vacations. If your wife was in labor, or you got you wisdom teeth pulled (due to the meds). Funerals were never a given. Count a 3 day pass on the most. At least, that's how it was for us Grunts when I served.

Edit: I also notice he doesn't have the wheel badge on his uniform. There's always the possibility this photo is old, or some of the posted facts are wrong, but it's really leading to my guess that he had issues before, and they forced him out of the Infantry because he was unstable.

Yeah another good point. Last I recalled 8 years to SGT or your out. Demotion was likely. This whole thing reeks of something. Just at face value, this guy doesn't look very fit for duty.

No different than any other place, but I don't think that was the case in this instance.
If he served 9 years, then it would be safe to say he re-upped twice.
Was it possible he was stuck in a bad spot? Yes he probably was in a shitty unit, but I think now it's easier than ever to opt out due to cutbacks.
I bet he could have gotten an honorable discharge and been on his way in a couple months tops. 
If he had issues then he should have made an IG complaint. There are safety lines put into place for these reasons. He really had no excuse not to get out.

There's no terrorism here. Lopez was a troubled man with a very fragile psyche. He lost it and took out his frustrations on his fellow soilders. A terrible, senseless tragedy.


With respect to the shooter's time in Iraq, I suspect it probably had nothing at all to do with it. He saw no combat, no IEDs, suffered no visible injuries or wounds, and was there for only a few months, during the  latter stages of the drawdown -- the safest time to be in Iraq.

But, as always, Mr Lopez may not have been  mentally stable enough to even be in a hostile area. Everybody reacts differently to the reality of finding themselves in a place where folks want to kill them.
