I think the highest those reached was in the 6 range. I saw some footage of the 8.8 that hit four years ago and it was very chaotic. At least they were prepared, since the Govt told the people that a bigger one was coming soon.

A tsunami warning was in effect for Chile, Peru and Ecuador.
A tsunami watch was issued for Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The tsunami threat to Hawaii still was being evaluated. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center was working to determine the level of danger for Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California, as well as Canada's British Columbia.

I saw a documentary years and years ago that mentioned that Chili sits on a fault line and one day (just a matter of when) it's going to slide into the sea, causing a tide that would wipe out a great % of the world population.

By the time I went to bed, they had already called off all warnings/watches. 

We're definitely due for a big one here. The last big one I was in was a 7.9 back in 2002 in Alaska, and that baby was powerful. Being from Alaska, I've been in lots of earthquakes, but I immediately knew this one was different. Thankfully, the quake was located in a lower population area or it would have done catastrophic damage. We were living out in the bush north of Fairbanks, and we went out on the deck when the main shaking started to slow down. Our Dodge Ram was literally bouncing off the ground, and the trees were moving like the wind was blowing 35 MPH. There were a few other houses about a 1/4 mile away, and we heard one guy yell, "Whoohoo!"  Typical Alaskan lol.

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck early Saturday morning in Japan's Kyushu island, the same region a magnitude 6.2 quake struck late Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that tsunami advisories have been issued for parts of the Asian island nation following the latest earthquake.
