Richard Wright from Pink Floyd died today

This really made me cry. Pink Floyd always has and will remind me of Iran. They are VERY popular there, as in most countries. If they only knew what they've done for the generations there.... I hope Richard Wright knew that before he died.

danDNA

well we can cry together.

despite all that they have done all of them remained down to earth(except for Waters - who now realises what a cock he was). i had no idea that they were big in Iran, was there a particular reason, or just the usual?

This news has me showing feelings of an almost..human nature. ..This will not do.

R.I.P. to a true legend.

first syd barrett, now wright.  fucking shame.

i'm surprised wright lived to be as old as he did, actually.  he was a HUGE coke-head in the 80s, which in fact is why he didn't participate in the album "a momentary lapse of reason."

rip bro.  this was the first i had heard of it.  jesus.

danDNA

and George referred to them as Plink Floyd. marble mouth.

i think you REALLY ARE right about that.  el-square-o.  to the bone.  the guy is a wet blanket.

EvB

I lose track of hip-vs-square from time to time  ;)

get the cooool . . get the cool shoeshine . . . .

Tonight, in animation class (no, not the one I wanted originally but the one that is right for me, I'm happy) we watched this vid (below) as an example of one animation style.  Now, ?i know this is a tad old by your average undergrads' measure.  - but DAMN!  I was the ONLY ONE gently bopping and signing under her breath!

For the love of GOD!  Am I the only one who thinks this whole series of animated vids are a classic moment in music video?!!?

Oh well - i guess age has its privileges.

They are popular because besides being brilliant, Iranians really identify with the themes in the music. Old and new songs apply here. I have beeen to so many parties where people chant the lyrics like it's religion. In fact, most Iranian families are secular, but Pink Floyd (besides classical Iranian music - renaissance poetry sung as opera) is a religion in Iran. I think people find a lot of release in the music and that applies to individuals and groups of friends/fans. It used to be underground, but it has really grown. It's sort of like the Plastic People of the Universe in Czechoslovakia during the cold war?

i remember certain bands really resonating with Eastern Bloc countries during the 80's now you mention it, Pink Floyd were big there also, and Iron Maiden and Bob Marley as well. Rebel music?
A lot of bands would have loved to have been big in the East but it didn't work like that, there was no marketing strategy in the world that could have got you fans there. the Clash for example would have killed themselves to be big in Communist countries but i don't think it happened for them.

I love Jamie Hewlett's animations, his graphic novels were the shit, i thought they would have revived Tank Girl with all the publicity surrounding Gorillaz, but no such luck :(

this is from a pink floyd cover show in tehran.  as you might imagine, the internet infrastructure in morocco sometimes is SHIT... hence my inability to watch this video.  thought i'd post it here so i can remember to watch it when i have a decent connection.  how is it?

EvB

mmmmmmmmm . . . not a horrible performance.  Wish I could say the same for the sound quality. But then, that's the nature of both YouTube and live recordings.

EvB

I CANNOT help myself.  Animation class has be going back to all the old Gorillaz vids I liked.  This is my favorite.

And BTW - you have not LIVED until you've seen a real life moose looming over your car.  And, unless you think fast, (in rutting season particularly) you may not live much longer!   ;:)
