Credit / Debit Card Skimming at Gasoline Pumps

Up All Night

The gasoline store I frequent has a protective sticker over the edge of the door that opens to the card reader. I have always assumed that if the sticker was in place that the reader had not been tampered with.

I have not read about the particulars of the Racetrac skimming to know if Racetrac had stickers that were removed, or somehow defated on their card reader access doors.

Authorities in New York on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 announced the indictment of thirteen men accused of running a multi-million dollar fraud ring that allegedly installed Bluetooth-enabled wireless gas pump skimmers at filling stations throughout the southern United States.

According to documents released by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., the accused stole more than $2.1 million in the scheme. Investigators say the men somehow gained access to pumps at Raceway and Racetrac gas stations throughout Georgia, South Carolina and Texas and installed skimming devices.

This is why I never use my Check Card  card to pay for anything. ONLY my credit card.  You have much better protection as a consumer with a credit card than a Check Card.

Guess I'm a dinosaur.  I still try to use cash for purchases.

You're missing out.   Use a card that pays you 1% or better back.  You'd be surprised how much it adds up.
