Bell has always used simple and relatively inexpensive equipment in his home studio.  Those of us who have built similar studios dig his down to earth minimalism. ...

I was thinking about the actual studio structure Sirius built for him.  No doubt even that is chump change for Sirius but still, what good is a contract if you can just walk away from it this easily?  No penalty clause?

Currently, SiriusXM has 27 million subscribers. Meanwhile, Art Bell currently has a WordPress website with a couple of audio clips and a half-baked apology note. Pretty sure someone's business model is broken, but it's not SiriusXM.

Oh boy... the truth has been spoken.

Here's my thoughts:

Like many of us, I waited patiently for his return. The world is more complete with Art Bell on the air. That being said....

I'll be dropping Sirius assuming they don't work something out. They've got a week.

The truly sad thing is that I probably don't need to give them a week. The damage is already done. Art Bell fueled subscriptions have to be dropping like flies. And the re-sub rate will not be spectacular.

Then there's a level of BULLSHIT which needs to be addressed:

1. Any talk of Art doing a stream from his website is BULLSHIT. I'm a 20 year IT professional who's worked for both the government and private sector companies that designed systems for massive IT deployments. Art, will not be using icecast to aggregate a single show for four hours a night. It's too expensive for the volume needed to serve his audience (and likely the reason Sirius said no). Sirius' solution may be marginal- but it performs no better or worse than any other solution out there.

2. Any icecast based solution from a third party *provider*, most likely cannot handle the load. You're talking about a million listeners minimum assuming Art goes for a year without freaking out and quitting. That is huge bandwidth: even if they streamed at a ridiculously small 8k a second. That's 800000 MEGABYTES a second required for a million listeners or requires an aggregate available bandwidth of 100000 megaBIT a second. Think of it requiring the equivalent of 5000 Comcast connections (roughly $500,000.00 a month).

3. As if point #2 weren't bad enough, now there's the server hardware required. I don't even want to calculate those numbers or the cost of maintaining them.

Bottom line: There's only two companies on earth that can put out the kind of bandwidth needed for Art's show. Google or Sirius. He's burnt his relationship with Sirius. And Google's solution is Youtube Streaming.

Art either goes back to terrestrial radio- or it's over. He should have dealt with Sirius though and not dug his heals in so hard- so a compromise could be found.
