She is on XM 106 from 3-4pm I believe........

     I remember being exposed to her show because of a co-worker who only listened to talk radio, and she seemed to employ destructive criticism over constructive. Every third caller catching a ration of shit. Which they probably brought on themselves...

I listened to her regularly back in the mid-'90s.  I liked her straightforward advice, even if I didn't agree with all of it.  However, at the time, she was pretty anti-military family.  I remember a few calls where she basically told military wives to dump their husbands since they made shitty dads because they were gone for a bit here and there.  The mid-'90s were NOT heavy deployment times at all, nothing like the past decade. There were trainings here and there, TDY, etc, probably a lot less travel than a businessman who has to travel around for work.  After hearing her crappy advice on that issue, I didn't listen as often.  Once her son joined the Army, her attitude changed 100%.  All of a sudden she was rah rah go military family!  That made me lose any interest I had in listening to her. It seems she has different standards when it comes to her own family.

She is not a therapist. She is a do-it-my-way-or-you-will-suffer bloviate. She has done more damage to people's emotions than she ever helped. Her definition of help is get a bunch pf people to deride another... she really is evil.

Not to say grandma's don't have a right to deride their progeny.

I was aware her degree was in physiology and she had no counseling credentials, but I still thought some of her advice was decent, if not just common sense. I think she's since obtained some counseling credentials, but I'm not positive, since I no longer listen.  The whole "do as I say and not as I do" was too much of a turnoff for me.

There was also her "I am the expert of any cause I join" vibe. She was really into Judaism back in the mid-'90s, and she spoke about it a lot.  There was some backlash in the LA Judaism community, from what I recall.  Michael Medved mockingly said she wanted to be known as "Queen of the Jews," and once she wasn't crowned that, she started leaning fundamentalist Christian, where she was more easily accepted.

Yeah she has the listeners. It is sort of like jerry springer on the radio... well not so over the top trashy. I didn't listen all that often but her call ins were so poorly educated on what is appropriate therapy they fell victim to clinical abuse. I am not being pollyannish here. Lots of people live desperate lives for varied reasons. Finding someting believed to be help but instead closed them to effective therapy should be criminal. But since laura has no license to worry about it is just a payday for her. And I have no doubt she believes her punitive style is best... shame.

I absolutely love and admire Dr. Laura and was crushed when she moved to XM. Until I subscribed to Sirius XM just 2 weeks ago, I was able to listen to her (in a limited way) through her youtube channel. You can check it out here. http://www.youtube.com/user/drlaura Hopefully this will be of some use until you find a stream. I never did find one but gave up rather quickly so, good luck.

I'm with you.  After she left radio, I listened to her call of the day on her website, but now I can listen to the whole show.

I think she helps people and gives very good advice, especially for people that just want to get along with neighbors or in-laws or how to respond to someone that may be out of line.  Or wonder if they are the ones out of line.  Or if they are a little confused when a close relative is a dirt bag whether to dump them or not, stuff like that. 

She's there for a little advice or to stiffen someone's spine.  If they truly need therapy or counseling or a lawyer or financial consultant, she tells them.

To my ear, when she seems to be harsh it's because she has a limited amount of time and often they are subconsciously trying to evade what their real issue is.  Usually they finally get it and it works out and they don't end up feeling berated.



Sometimes I think she's off base, or doesn't get what the caller is saying.  She seems too hard core as a person, I don't think she and I would be friends, but I like her show and have learned a lot about how to deal with people and get along a little better.

This could take a while.

First, I don't care about her politics. I don't care about her position on gays (well I do, but not in a professional way). I don't even care about her rigid position on working moms, even though she speaks similarly to Phyllis Schafley.

She isn't a therapist. Common sense works well for your neighbors, unless your neighbor is in crisis. But LS misrepresents herself as a doctor. And that is not unintentional. So it is quite possible that someone may be calling her show with real problems. But the thrust of the show isn't help, it is entertainment. So when you are enjoying someone explaining their angst, no matter how trivial it may sound to you it may just be the surface. In a safe and healthy therapy environment it takes an average of 3 hours of face time to establish some of the more insignificant issues and problems a person wants or needs to work on. But someone with little or no other avenues calls for help and quite possibly is left with open emotional wounds after a 15 minute banter and told to basically stand up and accept it was nothing more than poor choices.

If LS were to take as has been suggested here, a Dear Abby approach to what to say when a neighbor parked on your lawn... that would be the end of it. But it isn't.

And yes it is often comforting to realize someone else can't handle problems as well as you can, hell it may even cause you to smirk.

In the real world there are millions of people living lives of quiet desperation, for more reasons than I care to enumerate. If someone were seeking help and that is their first introduction... guess how willing they will be to attempt or seek treatment. But hey, its a fun 4 hours.

I agree 100% I remember back in the 90s about 1998 or so. A woman called her show and ask Dr Laura advice about her hubby. Her hubby was in the Navy with 16 years in. I wife did not want her hubby to reenlist for other 4 years because he will be on ships for most of his tour, even thou he could retire from the navy with 20 years of service. Dr laura told the caller to tell the hubby not to reenlist in the navy.
