Quote from: George DroolyThe "nigger" (refuse to say "n-word" like I'm a chastised kindergartner) incident was bullshit. Nothing she said was used in an offensive context... but we are a society beyond - devoid - of context at this point, it's a fallen world of braindead imbeciles, etc.

Indeed my friend, good for you for not being afraid to say it..... THAT CAN APPLY TO ANY OF US!!!! (Colour has nothing to do with it!!)

Second confession of day:
Ina stupid job, I would listen to her w/earbuds. She was saner than the dudes I worked with. I'm into her family thing, but I could only take so much so often. Mostly her attitude. But what was too funny, was my coworkers prolly figgered the hippie dude was lissening to devil grateful dead drug mojo.

That is too funny! Oh, and to answer your "hot or not" question - Definitely hot. I am beyond certain her husband is a very happy man when it comes to "bed time". You listen to her so you know, she is all about pleasing and satisfying your man and, in tunr, satisfying yourself. That's hot.

I love her too, just didn't want to admit it in front of Onan.  But I'll just have to hope he doesn't see this.

Awesome!

I admire Onan too, so in some universe somewhere Onan and Dr. Laura exist in harmony and are having a beer somewhere together. Both are kinda brilliant.

Dr. Laura has some type of credential in marriage/family counseling, which is some might find deliciously  ironic considering the turmoil in her own life.

I listened to her fairly regularly in the `90s. From my perspective, Dr. Laura`s schtick was to dispense - via her radio program - a form of "tough-love", pop-psychology advice, grounded in mainstream conservative values. Nothing wrong with that; it was relatively innocuous. However, her holier-than-thou disposition began to grind on my nerves after awhile.

Frankly, when it comes to conservative female commentators, I don`t think they get any better than:

ahhhma big fan!

Marriage and couple couseling is significantly different than therapy (LS claims to have a certificate in marriage and family counseling). Although to most the difference wouldn't be important until they needed help themselves. Simply put, conseling pretty much deals with the here and now and establishing agreements on ways to interact more effectively.

Therapy on the other hand deals with analyzing the whys ane wherefores of behaviors and coping skills with the goal of improving them so one's life can be more effective.

It isn't all that hard to use common sense and fairness at the counseling level. But on a therapeutic level common sense is a weak enforcer to changing thoughts and behaviors.

If LS simply referred callers outside the counselor of marriage role to more appropriate treatment... maybe it would be a wash. But there is no way to truly identify that without significant skills and a much more indepth assessment.

Yeah I am spending way too much on this... but it is important to realize a marriage counselor is not a mental health specialist.

I listened to hundreds of callers to Dr. Laura's program. I can't recall a single instance when her call screeners put through a caller who could hear voices in their head, or some such other mental disorder.

The typical caller was a young female embroiled in a dysfunctional relationship, whereby Dr. Laura would, in  rather unambiguous langauge, advise the young lady to dump the loser, dope-smoking bf and  seek help from family.  In other words, common sense.

It must be the luck of the draw, because I have a specific memory of a woman in more than just emotional dysfunction. A woman dealing with a sibling's recent suicide and LS telling her to get over it. I think it was about 5 years ago.

I will concede that is a small percentage... but it should be zero. no excuses. Medical advice even proffered by a layman for a profit should have a real high standard.

All in all my biggest impression is that it's sad that callers don't have another trusted parent, friend, elder, weeji bored, community, or therapist to rap the big questions.  So it's sad that they call her. What I learned from the show was to not get my life like those.

wise words indeed.

My biggest problem with dr laura is that she is not spending any real time with the callers. If the person has a problem, they should see a dr in person not on the radio program.

If you've never seen this scene see it now, thank me later.

Sometimes people end up alone no matter how hard they try.

I listened to Dr. Laura for quite some time but hadn't listened to her in years (since she moved to SiriusXM) until recently when I subscribed to Sirius for Art Bell's return, of course. I don;t know if I have changed in those years or she has changed but now when I listen, I hear a woman who is far less patient and far more pissed off than I remember her to be. Maybe because I am now listening to her on Sirius I hear a change since there she can say, behave and do what ever she pleases whereas she was somewhat restricted on public radio. Or maybe she is burned out or has become more bitchy with time or, again, maybe it's me. I still agree with her core values and beliefs, for the most part, but I no longer enjoy listening as it is just too awkward and uncomfortable. Believe me, I am born and raised in Los Angeles so I have rather thick skin and am certainly not overly sensitive but her show now is just well, you'd have to hear it to know. *shrugs*

I think you express your thoughts well here, Batty...  I listened occasionally to Dr. Laura and agree that she's become more brittle, less sympathetic (not that she was ever a foundtain of compassion).  Listening to her just is not fun anymore, but then again, I am no fan of argutainment.  I don't like conflict.

I also used to listen to her, then stopped when she went to satellite.  I think her advice is solid much of the time, but I think she misses badly once in awhile.  There are several responses that she gets from callers constantly, and they are the same ones she was getting years ago.  In the past she would have days when she just rolled with them and days when she didn't as much, but yeah she sounds completely fed up now.

Some of those responses are:

- Callers that talk over her

- Callers that respond with 'it's just...', or 'even if...' 'even though...' or similar - subconsciously trying to get a different answer from her

- Callers that don't answer her question, and she tells them that, asks them again, and they still don't answer it

- Callers that immediately say 'I don't know' without even thinking about it first when she asks them something

- Callers who after several minutes of issue solving and agreement say they agree with her 'but...', which then means they didn't agree at all

- Callers who give lousy examples of what their problem is (with, say, a neighbor or in-law) - the first example they offer is no big deal so Dr Laura goes into a response telling them to just ignore it on get on, and they come back with an example which is much worse and really is a big deal that shouldn't be ignored.  She wants them to give her their best examples of what the problem is

- Callers who start by asking a different question than their real issue, maybe they start complaining their kid has a smart mouth and only later after Dr Laura has spent time addressing that do they reveal the kid is a drug addict or something - which was the reason for their call

- Callers that laugh or giggle, probably nervousness, drives her nuts

After decades on the air, I can see how hearing this from callers constantly would drive her bonkers.  Maybe she just needs a longer vacation.

You know, you are absolutely right...and now I hate the callers and am back to adoring Dr. Laura. The last three examples you gave drive me screaming mad!!!

This same thing happened to me. It was only when I got Sirius that I was reminded of Dr. Laura's existence. I used to listen to her all the time. I listened to her recently and felt tired. I'm not sure if it was her, the callers or all of it.

Ok, here is why I don't like Laura Schlessinger.

Because she doesn't bitch-slap those callers who don't know the difference between a problem and a dilemma.

i quit listening 10 years ago when some woman called in  about something and said she shacked up with a guy and not using birth control. dr laura went off on her for a solid 3 minutes about pregnancy , and when allowed to talk the caller said "i had a full hysterectomy, and therefore cannot have children".

Anyone know ANYWHERE to listen to her show online free? (You would think after dropping her radio show she would want ALL THAT COULD to listen)

You can listen to her 'call of the day' for free on her website, although I think you have to sign up for a free account.  She charges a subscription if you want to hear more
