Gone forever. If the Hostess plants are eventually purchased by other bakeries, the jobs will almost certainly be filled by non-union workers. Few, if any, will be from among the former Hostess union employees.

I wonder what the former Hostess employees think of their greedy union bosses now? Stupid question is it not? I'm almost certain these drones blame Hostess. Just look at how Government Motors made out like bandits. The Twinkies makers are mad at Hostess.

Yes, stupid decisions by the big bosses about their compensation, so that it appears they don't share in sacrifices asked of workers, can ultimately be the straw that breaks the corporate back. But it's an emotional reaction on the part of labor, and simply not rational; because that attitude actually works to their great disadvantage - the worst possible outcome - for thousands of workers, all out of pique. It was a financially suicidal decision by the union not to make the concessions management needed, and was based on resentment.

But the bosses compensation itself had absolutely no effect on the company's bottom line. The big bosses could have been paid 10X what they were, or the top-50 salaried bosses could have been reduced to $1 a year, and it wouldn't have amounted to a drop in the bucket. My point was union resentment led to a stupid, suicidal decision by the union.

But it's an entirely different question about the decisions on boss compensation. I don't know enough about the details of what management tried to do about that. But if the bosses truly took no cuts at all (which I would find really shocking), then that's a stupid managerial decision. But not from a financial perspective: only from a labor relations perspective. Because it has nothing to do substantively with the company's financial status.
