The biggest worry is that all those extra people in London will lead to the island tipping up in the air!

You laugh.  Here is an exchange that took part in our US Congress a couple years ago:

In a discussion regarding a planned US military buildup on the Pacific island of Guam, Rep Hank Johnson (D-Ga) expressed some concerns about the plans to Adm. Robert Willard, head of the U.S. Pacific fleet.

"My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize," Johnson said. Willard paused and replied, "We don't anticipate that."

... wow.

Just to clarify, that isn't all Rep. Johnson said. also said was:

Quote“I wasn’t suggesting that the island of Guam would literally tip over,” said Johnson. “I was using a metaphor to say that with the addition of 8,000 Marines and their dependents â€" an additional 80,000 people during peak construction to the port on the tiny island with a population of 180,000 â€" could be a tipping point which would adversely affect the island’s fragile ecosystem and over burden its already overstressed infrastructure.

“Having traveled to Guam last year, I saw firsthand how this beautiful â€" but vulnerable island â€" is already overburdened, and I was simply voicing my concerns that the addition of that many people could tip the delicate balance and do harm to Guam.”

Now was that just a cover up for stupid? could be. but it is disengenuous to only post one part of a comment. Johnson may be all kinds of stupid. But we have all asked stupid questions at times.

He did go on to talk about the impact of additional people and the environment, but that seemed separate to his concern of capsizing the island.

Yes, that was a cover up for stupid.  Watching a clip on YouTube, I'm fairly convinced he meant what he said the first time, and the later comment was damage control.

I'd like to believe he just spoke before thinking, but it doesn't help when that isn't the only dumb thing this guy has said.

I watched the clip too. I didn't take the same meaning you did. I guess it may be bias. Maybe for us both.

Just to add perspective:

QuoteMitt Romney - "I'm not concerned about the very poor."

Alaska Gov. Walter Hickel once justified a plan to kill hundreds of wolves by saying, "You just can't let nature run wild."

"It's not your job to stop me for speeding." -- Darrell Issa, Cleveland native and U.S. representative from California, after a border patrol officer stopped him going 90 mph through an interstate construction zone

"I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman." -- Schwarzenegger

"For a century and a half now, America and Japan have formed one of the great and enduring alliances of modern times." -- President Bush.

"If the King's English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me." -- Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, Texas governor

"Only one thing would be worse than the status quo. And that would be for the status quo to become the norm." -- Elizabeth Dole, U.S. senator from North Carolina

"I think incest can be handled as a family matter within the family." -- Jay Dickey Jr., U.S. representative from Arkansas

"Do you have blacks, too?" -- President Bush, to Fernando Cardoso, president of Brazil

People say stupid things all the time.

BobGrau

I'm ashamed at how easily I believed that. What was I saying about stereotypes earlier?

I think being exposed to all that noorism over the years has lowered my expectations.

I admit I have a very very low opinion of these people.  The things they say, the laws they pass.  I have no trouble believing most of them are either stupid, dishonest, self dealing, whatever else.  Very skilled at double talk and getting themselves elected, but that's about the extent of their abilities.  How many of them have actual life accomplishments before getting into public office these days?  All one has to do is look at the mess at all levels of government, all this debt, waste, corruption, to realize we have too many of the wrong people making decisions.

This Hank Johnson sure seems slow and stupid in that video to me.  And the admiral didn't seem surprised by it.

LONDON 2012: ON YOUR MARKS, GET SEX.. GROPE!

July 18, 2012

At the ancient Olympics in Greece athletes took part in the nude â€" and sex and the Games have been linked ever since.

Now US football beauty and Olympic gold medallist Hope Solo, 30, has lifted the lid on the saucy backdrop to the modern Olympics, revealing: “There is a lot of sex going on.”

With hundreds of toned bodies crammed together in the athletes’ village it’s not surprising that things can get steamy. Especially as some competitors even think it helps spur them on to glory.

Here we reveal some of the sexiest facts about the Olympic Games...

THE NAKED OLYMPICS

ATHLETES at the ancient Olympics in Greece ran and wrestled naked, even covering their bodies with olive oil.

The word gymnasium means “school for naked exercise”, and attempts to introduce loincloths were thrown out.

But at the 2012 London Games streakers could be fined up to £20,000.

CONDOM CRAZY

SINCE the 1992 Games in Barcelona athletes have been given free condoms.

This summer 150,000 will be supplied by Durex in the Olympic Village. At Sydney in 2000, 70,000 were ordered â€" and they ran out.

RAMPANT OLYMPIANS

AMERICAN javelin thrower Breaux Greer slept with three women a day at the 2000 Olympics.

At one recent winter Games, US skier Carrie Sheinberg claimed a national bobsleigh team were offering their medals in exchange for a night of passion.

In 2000 US target shooter Josh Lakatos described the house he stayed in as “a friggin’ brothel!” And US swimming champ Ryan Lochte says 70 to 75% of all Olympians are having sex adding: “Hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.”

SEX BREEDS SUCCESS

SOME Olympians went on to achieve greatness after a spot of nookie.

Long jumper Bob Beamon had sex the night before setting his legendary world record at the 1968 Games.

US 10,000m runner Lynn Jennings, who won bronze in 1992 Olympics, reckoned it was a psychological boost saying: “Sex the night before solidifies my core feeling of happiness.”

Team GB beach volleyball player Zara Dampney, 26, says: “It’s the end of a fouryear cycle so there is going to be some kind of release at the end of it.”

ORGASMS WIN MEDALS

MOST experts say sex doesn’t affect performance, and Israeli scientist Alexander Olshanietzky reckons it can help some, especially female high jumpers and runners.

He simply states: “The more orgasms, the more chances of winning a medal.”

BROTHEL BOOM

SEX trafficking doubled at the 2004 Athens Olympics and in the run up to the London Games some escort agencies have cashed in.

Police have recently closed down a string of brothels in east London.

HITLER THE GROPER

SMUT at the Olympics isn’t always welcomed by the athletes. After US runner Helen Stephens, won the 100 metres in Berlin in 1936 she visited Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s box where, she said, he squeezed her and pinched her bottom.

In light of the Olympics note on sex and Hitler's fingers back in Munich, it makes one wonder if the world would have been spared WWII if Hitler had just been laid more. I think there were plenty of women who'd love to have fucked Der Fuhrer.

I just read that the authorities in London were concerned about clearing the stadium area after the opening ceremonies due to the large crowd - 80,000 people.

80,000?  That's a disappointing crowd for college football (real, not metric) at Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, FSU, Michigan, Penn State, Southern Cal, UCLA, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State, etc, etc etc.

What's with this crowd problem?

Depends. A proper nuke will clear the area no problem, but if it's just a dirty bomb the traffic's going to be murder.

Zircon

Bob, I could just see all that dust and smoke. Folks coughing, blowing dust out of their noses, shaking their jackets, dusting their hair and swearing. It'd be hard to see and with not everyone driving on the left the head-on collisions would mount quickly.

U.Fill, probably don't have a lot of room in London for stadiums. But what do I know - ask BobGrau.

Analog, not sure how old that sweet young thing is but she is pretty damn hot.

I don't know the figures, but I'd imagine 80,000 in one place is more than we're used to. It's only a wee place.

tread carefully, gentlemen.  anagrammy is watching.

RE Jenneke... it appears the lucky one is the YouTube poster who posted that.  Their first video on their channel, and almost 9 million views in just a few days.

RE 80,000... that does seem rather low indeed.

Hey I assume when it comes to Olympics, a large majority in the crowd are family members of the competitors. What a big happy family event this might turn out to be... getting molested by the TSA, sex rampant all over the field and in all the dorms, missiles going off on rooftops, UFO abductions and anal probings, bomb blasts tearing apart everyone, people running for the lives faster than the competitors can run, fireworks, music, condoms falling from the sky, etc... then a cool down with gatorade while chillin in a family size plastic coffin.  Should be fun for the kids.

thanks for the link. been watching for the last hour or so. I cant find it on tv. edit, well I guess it would be on bbc..dur.

NBC is waiting to air it tonight (tape) so its ratings will be high. Screw NBC - this is an international event. Self serving bastards !!!

That would be pretty sad. I like the fact that at the Olympics,  the world can leave their bullshit at the door and pretend to enjoy each other's company, if only for a little while. The opening ceremonies are really good though.

I sure hope you're right. I have this weird feeling about something happening though.

Pretty damn moving. It almost brings a tear to this dead cold soul of mine.  :'( Good luck to everyone.
