How do you explain a phenomena I just heard about....wait for it....."white shadow animals!"

I saw some of those back in the seventies.

It certainly helps if the reporter is.  If I think they're just doing it for pay, then the reporter doesn't add much to the story's credibility.  OTOH, if they're too interested in it, that limits credibility too.

For example, how would you judge Art's credibility in his statements about the light therapy he takes for his back?  We know he does have, as he says, a really bad back.  He's getting paid to advertise the product.  However, there are plenty of products he could advertise instead, especially with the way he limits ad time on MITD.  Overall I think he sincerely believes the product works, and that does add a little to the credibility of the proposition that it really does work.  Very hard to judge with pain relieving products, especially for musculoskeletal pain.On "7 Second Delay" on WFMU, they usually used to prompt (on the air, because it's a joke) phoners-in, "You love the show, can't believe you got thru."
My son, who's a VP for a market research firm, and told me that the sales impact of a celeb endorsement is very substantial even when its obviously a paid gig.  All that matters is if they're trusted (or trend setters for younger markets). I also know that LED/IR nerve therapy is a placebo effect at best, else insurers would OK it to reduce expenditures on more expensive Rx drugs...plus the FDA says its been ineffective in clinical tests.

What was suggested was that a shadow was moving around independently of anything else.

As far as I know, this is the only documented case of that happening.

I know Art said that he's seen one (shadow being) recently, but I'd have sworn he said that he saw them back in classic C2C days too.  Same about OBE...I know he used to mention his OBE in Paris frequently on the old show.  Now he say he never had one.  Must have decided it was the abysinthe.

"RESULTS

The mean NRS scores in the treatment group fell from 6.9 of 10 to 3 of 10 at the end of the study. The mean NRS in the placebo group fell from 7.4 of 10 to 6 of 10.
CONCLUSION

The IR therapy unit used was demonstrated to be effective in reducing chronic low back pain, and no adverse effects were observed."

Note: this study only had 40 patients initially participating (one dropped out) from 3 doctors and done in Canada (where the device used was made.) For what its worth.

When they approve it for Medicare, I'd say its been proven effective.  Insurers and the govt pay billions for Rx and therapy for back pain, neuropathy, and other chronic pain.  If there was an alternative, I think it would be leaped on. 40 people in three uncontrolled regimens isn't effective testing.

I agree, but that rather begs the question whether he is in his right mind or not. We know almost nothing about the man other than his radio persona... And therefore, I choose to assume that he is a deceitful liar, insane and generally a horrible person...
I think that about sums it up.  Funny how you could not just quit after saying that we know nothing about the man other than his radio persona but instead go on to assign him various attributes.

Robert

Quote from: Yorkshire pud on November 29, 2015, 09:42:09 AMAnd is that Noory's fault?
It's not his fault that he wound up in that position, but it is his fault that he's not doing a better job at it.  Maybe he really doesn't have much aptitude for it, but that's not the whole story because he was better when he started than he is now.  And then there are people we rag on for undeserved enrichment even when they don't sabotage their own effort.  It's pretty common in show biz for people to make fun of those who seem to have achieved a better station than their performance justifies.

Yeah, we can all fool around with a quote, budday!.

I didn't say he was insane or any of those other things. Don't be a prick. Or at least try and work on your prickish tendencies - I won't expect miracles.

If he hasn't the aptitude then it's not his fault he can't do it to your (and others') expectations. It is the fault of his paymasters who haven't recognised it. I've worked with people way out of their depth and they've either been let go or demoted when it's been apparent. I wouldn't tackle a great many things because I know I can't do them; I've tackled things I thought I couldn't do but surprised no-one more than me that I could. Noory is in a niche market, and he's got an audience, equals sponsors, equals revenue. That he can do it is mainly irrelevant in an objective way as what he does isn't making something or life dependent.

Oh that's happened here. He was spectacularly sacked from his morning show because (in his words) he was too good and deserved Fridays off to do his Friday TV show...so there. He's since returned to the BBC and has a much better attitude, well I think so anyway.

Actually, I prefer the animals live. It is not until after I'm done that I kill them...

You seem to infer that Art is not sane... Possibly schizophenia (though after speculating, you do say that probably is not it.)  You question if he is seeing things and all this after saying that we know nothing about him.  Just seems odd to me that you make that statement and then follow it up with speculation.  You appear to have the right idea (we know nothing about the man), but then just cannot help yourself.

Like I said- I really don't care one way or the other.  Maybe he is playing "us", maybe the intruder will kidnap him tomorrow.  Either way, not my problem and speculation is pointless (particularly in light of the insightful observation by a poster here that we "know almost nothing about the man other than his radio persona.")

I guess this all comes down to whether you call Art a liar or not. I respect Art enough not to call him a liar.

Last Friday, Art had the "I hate Art Bell" line.  Sounds like he can open up the "Art Bell is a liar" line this Friday.

VtaGeezer

The debate over Art's veracity about the "attacks" is getting into the weeds of personal destruction and attack.  My skepticism about Art is like that toward politicians' claims.  People whose livelihood depends on public popularity often stretch and embellish the truth.  I expect it, but sometimes it's over the line.  I can assimilate a politician's embellishment in that context without calling him a liar.  I view Art as a great and talented entertainer, not my cult leader or Presidential choice.  Edit- And I don't believe he's so thin skinned to be offended by any the doubts as have as some of the groupies.

I agree, but that rather begs the question whether he is in his right mind or not. We know almost nothing about the man other than his radio persona. There is only one forum member who could comment on this with any level of authority and she is obviously not going to say anything. If we take Art at his word all the time, then we are also to believe that he really thought he saw a shadow person a few months ago. And he told us the other week that he saw a mouse jump up on his desk and "stare" at him. In both cases you could say that these are the actions of a showman, but then you could also apply that to his account of the "stalker". The only other explanation, as I see it, is that he is starting to have psychological issues and he genuinely believes the things he is seeing. Just because someone is high-functioning in one walk of life, doesn't mean that they are so in every other facet of it, and someone can suffer from schizophrenia, for example, no matter who or what they are. Not that I am suggesting this about Art, but just mentioning the possibility that things are not always so cut and dried.

I am just throwing this out in the fine tradition of irresponsible BellGab speculation, but there is something not right about the whole thing that I can't quite figure out.

I can only interpret from this comment that you feel Art may be schizophrenic...is that what you meant to say?

At least Art is honest enough to accept and recognize criticism and differing opinions.  Can you imagine Noory ever opening a "I hate George Noory" line?  Art seems to be comfortable being himself.  Noory seems to be as thin skinned as they come, no doubt because even he realizes he sucks as a radio show host.  Even Noory doesn't want to be Noory.  I can't say I blame him.

No. I have no idea what the situation is, just like everyone else. But if you start claiming to see outlandish things then I think that it is something that is at least worth considering. People tend to feel a familiarity with radio personalities that is entirely unwarranted. I think there are other explanations for all of this that are more likely, but I don't think we can totally rule out mental illness. As some have mentioned, a lot of it doesn't add up, and it is hard to tell what is actually going on under the surface.
