Okay...here's the deal.

I know someone that had gasoline sprayed in her window, her cat killed with a shovel and the word 'dyke' written in feces on her front door. Her crime? Living in the neighbourhood while gay.

I also know a man who was beaten into a coma with a baseball bat. His crime? Walking down the street while gay.

I also know a teenager who killed himself because of words written over and over again on his school locker.

General, Catsmile...Paladin; when was the last time you were afraid to walk down the street, or go to school or live in your own home?

Just words, you say? Please.

Do you think Art Bell would allow you to use these words on his radio show? No possible way. And not because he would be sued or worse....charged with a crime for inspiring others to commit violence....but because they are just mean, vulgar, insulting and hurtful.

Just words. How stupid is that? So, if they are just words I can stand in front of your house and scream 'child molester' and that would be okay?

There's a big difference between actions and words.  As your post brilliantly illustrates.

What's this lady doing in my yard??

I can tell it's my yard because I can see my gazebo in the background!

Mom took extra meds that day.  It was that kind of day.

So calling someone a name is roughly equivalent to beating them with a blunt object?
That's a big big big big big big big big fucking difference, darlin.  And happy birthday.

I think using those words is almost like a threat of violence to come. Even when said in jest, they can keep people afraid.

I think it is about time for me to start using these words.  I am all for feminism unless I meet somebody who is militant, then I casually mention that women should be at home popping out babies or question why we have to pay the same wage to a female firefighter if she cannot do as much physical work as a male counterpart.  When things hit the extremes it is usually a good idea to go in the opposite direction.

I cannot believe almost a week on and we are still beating on the horse.  It gets to the point where it almost seems to be a mindset that people will be intimidated into not using the word for fear of a repeat of this long, drawn out process.

When is the next gabcast, and can I call in on a landline?  It has been a couple of decades since I have used the word, and suddenly feel an urge to tell MV what I think of his sexual preferences...

***For the record, I do not really wonder why we pay the same wage, but it is fun to watch somebody's head explode.

Aldous is totally on point. Graham suddenly appeared behind the stupid mystery door on Dave's birthday show. That would mean the coincidence card was used.

So, supposing you had the power, what would the punishment be for a thought crime?
