back when i was driving a truck all over the usa (sept. 2003 to july 2005), mobile data was in its absolute infancy.  you could buy air cards, but coverage was spotty at best and the cost of data was horrendous.  the best solution at that time was to purchase a wifi plan at whatever truck stop chain you chose, and then to try and stay at that chain every time you parked.  it suuuuuuucked, especially when you couldn't get a parking spot close enough to the access point.  i remember being just absolutely amazed the first time i drove a few hundred miles listening to streaming audio without interruption via mobile data.  that was a seminal moment.

Hey MV I've actually considered this as a fall-back career if all else fails.  If it's not too personal to ask, why else did you think it was such a bad gig?  (A lot of truckers listen to Art Bell, so I'm not TOTALLY derailing the thread with this question.)

Probably should be sent to 'random' or a health thread. But it is worse when your "number 2" is more like "number 1." Taco Bells, in some places, will now be selling beer etc so at least you got that going for you when you get the phenomena.

I got tired of breathing diesel exhaust.

You have to leave the truck and walk in to a building if you want to poop, where you will then use a disgusting public bathroom.

Getting a shower can sometimes be difficult.

The pay doesn't adequately compensate you for the real time you actually put into the job. You're only paid when you're rolling.

The job is dangerous, and it opens you up to a million legal vulnerabilities, even if you follow every rule to the letter.

There are entire regions of the country where you can't find a place to park the truck overnight because they are just THAT unfriendly toward the industry and those who work in it. The northeast is the worst.

You are not allowed to carry a gun.

You work around a lot of dummies.

Many states will fine you if you're caught idling your truck. This means no AC if it's a billion degrees outside.

Truck driving turns your back into spaghetti.

You are now subject to intrusive and expensive background checks if you want a hazmat endorsement on your license, which many companies require you to get.

I could go on and on with reasons why I'm glad to be done driving a truck.

Whoa, ok thanks.  I guess I'll consider another backup career.  The freedom of the open road is appealing, but the danger aspect is what's kept me from signing up.  All it takes is one Miata or motorcycle in a blind spot to totally ruin someone's life.
