Art Bell

Started by sillydog, April 07, 2008, 10:21:45 PM

I don't think Art ruled out anything in his statement.  He may be hoping that his wife catches on to the US.  I worked with a guy who married a lady from Thailand.  He would love to go back there to live but his wife says no way.  She is very happy to be in the USA.  Art will simply be (bi-national)?

I agree.  Why are you guys assuming that his reasons for the move rule out a return to radio in some form? I still think "stay tuned, things are going on in the background" means something--what ELSE could it be but the return to radio announcement we've all be hoping for and anticipating? I would put forward that if he had NO intention of returning to radio, he'd make that abundantly clear.

The move may have been green card related but perhaps it was also a catalyst for him to decide to do something again (maybe even as a way of making the best of the situation). Or maybe he already had an offer/opportunity on the table and the move dovetailed with it nicely. Who knows?

I'll repeat what I've said before...guarded optimism is the way to go here. Don't get hopes TOO up (he returns to C2C 5 nights a week and drives Noory away), but don't assume the worst, either (we'll never hear Art on the radio again). Just continue to be patient and hopeful and he will do exactly what he wants to do and will let us know in his own time.

Scully

I don't read a final goodbye into Art's post.  Why are they "working like dogs" to fix up the house in Pahrump?  Just to be there a short while?

I'm sure the family will return to the Phillipines from time to time, if for no other reason than to visit Airyn's family.  That little girl is a powerful magnet for visits with the grandparents.  If I were gonna go flying back and forth between countries, I know I'd love to have a home in both places.  Why stay at Motel 6 when you can have a condo of your own ready and waiting for your visits?

The green card thing may or may not be a real issue. Anyone know the requirements for keeping something like that?  In fact, I thought I'd heard Art say on air last year that Airyn has U.S. citizenship now.  Anyone remember for sure?  Little Asia is a U.S. citizen for sure, born in the USA.  Would they separate mother and child?

As I said earlier in this thread, I'm reading "The Art of Talk" right now.  Believe me, Art is nothing if not full of contradictions.  Re-read it if you don't believe me.  ::)

That's true, I guess. He has made a bunch of "stay tuned" comments.

But until he comes out and says otherwise, I'll abandon hope of a return at this point. I wish the guy the best.

Without trying to sound like Fort Rock, if Art does return to the airwaves it will be after October 31st because of a non-compete clause.

Time will tell.

Are you basing this on the fact that October 31 will be one year from Art's last broadcast?

Is one year a standard non-compete contract clause, or do you have specific information on this matter?  Inquiring minds want to know.  8)

Just basing it on the one year time frame....hopefully.

don't believe those internet third party hearsay rumors. they are always false with art bell.
i figured all along that bell was just visiting pahrump again like last time he did so regarding his wife's visa, and will later go back to manila. turned out to be right...

sounds like a good thing to do to get a good price for an eventual sale, just like selling the stuff inside like a plasma HDTV...

Then you don't believe Art when he says they're getting a larger tv to replace the old one?

yes but he didn't specify exactly where he will be getting and watching that bigger TV - perhaps in Manila?  8)

YNOT

I don't believe his location precludes a return to radio. Remember, he did coast shows from Manila.

If he were to do an internet show as Birnes appears to suggest, that would even be easier than broadcast radio was.

Still not convinced he's returning though...His "stay tuned" may be a child on the way, or maybe a new book. But I hope for the best...

Hate him or love him, Keith Olbermann's non-compete clause was only six months.  I've got to think that Art had to get a better deal.  Surely it's not a copyright infringement to have another paranormal conspiracy show going, even at the same time!  I mean, if Limbaugh sued all his imitators, he'd been in Court all the time and not on the air.  Also, it's Snoory who is the imitator and Art who is the original!

I'm not surprised that Art likes the same shows as me.

I also think it would be silly and VERY expensive for him to buy a giant TV in the states and ship it to the Philippines! It'd be much cheaper to just, you know, buy it there. But then I'm sure they already have a TV there, or several.

Really, I think these are separate tracks. Where Art lives and whether he returns to radio are, as far as I can tell, two different subjects. I'm sure there is a connection or at least, the one will impact the other, but--the answer to one question doesn't necessarily have any bearing on the other.

And yes, Art could just as easily broadcast from Manila as from the States. He's already done it. So that's a moot argument.

No, I'll remain on the path of guarded optimism--neither assuming the worst nor getting my hopes up too much, but keeping all possibilities open.

Questore

Exactly Morph, he's coming back in some flav of media, be patient people...

You are correct sir

You can`t tell me that Art isn`t risking subdural hematoma from self-bludgeoning of the frontal cranium due to extreme boredom. How can this man, this legend, this pioneer, be content with living in a third-world country, changing cat litter and house hubbing for a girl old enough to be his great
granddaughter, while she`s lip syncing to Lady Gaga videos?

Excuse me, but I just don`t get it.

This would be my feeling in general, too, except for that pesky HAM radio hobby of his. I think right now when he's not "working like a dog" on his house renovations, he's talking to operators around the world on his home setup, which keeps him busy enough.

Airyn has mentioned, too, on FB that she and Art both love Breaking Bad.  I've read that she was educated to be a teacher.  These are 2 things that make me think she's not really into Gaga.

I DO think Art wants to add to his radio-lust addiction as soon as it's legally possible.  Exactly how, we peons will have to stay tuned to find out.  ;)

The "enigmatic Scully", always cerebral and analytical. You`re probably right. But how much pleasure can you get out of asking a guy in Budapest how the weather is holding up?

I don't understand that either FtF, but apparently you and I are missing something here.  Art's been loving chatting with those Budapestians since he was 13 years old, and he still loves it enough to move thousands of miles just to have a bigger antenna.

Go figure.  ::)

The true question is this: How long can this thread last. If we do go into 2012 without a 'big announcement' from Art besides the sale of his old sweaty gym equipment, are we going to abandon the thought he will come back? ... and on the flip side, if we do have him come back, are we going to be disappointed.. ? will he be the same old Art? Would he ever change? .. so many questions. I wonder if he has a blender for sale. I'll keep watching.

I don't think Art was the same ever since he stopped doing his weekly shows. He just didn't seem to have the same passion for what he was doing. I think he could get back to being the same old Art if he got back into his weekly shows, but then again that would mean he still has some passion for doing a radio show. At this point, I just don't think it's there. Here's to hoping he's rediscovered some during his break. Cheers! Gulp, gulp :)

Here is my point.. when I listen to the classis Bell shows, there is a fire in his voice.. a meaning. And when I listen to the shows 2007-2010, it's dull, lifeless.. bored. I wonder .. 1) is he bored being a spoke on the wheel of Noory's empire? 2) he is angry being a spoke on the wheel since he built the empire himself! 3) Is he just ... bored!? Maybe that's it. Maybe at some point in his life, with a child he grew tired. The very fact he isn't active right now on HAM tells me he is somewhat tired during his spare moments. Maybe the new TV he just got will energize him.

I also wonder how many at Premiere are looking at this, and other threads out there, that want his return and want a demise to what George Noory has done to the show.

There are times I wish Knapp would host. Ian .. even Wells at some points, regardless of some of the negative equity he brings, it's still a better voice. But it's not Art Bell. And if it's not Art Bell it is NOT at all Coast to Coast. And for that reason it doesn't feel the same. Even with the same entrance music and the Inca dance playing out the show, it's all just pretend. Like a fantasy of what really used to be.

I long for the nights with Art would have a call say goodnight. Or the early mornings when he would play the show up (even when he knew full well it wouldn't be great)
.. that is the passion that lacks now. And the passion, to be honest, that lacked in the later Bell hostings.

....Maybe on the flip side of this whole thing WE, out there in listening land, are longing for something ourselves: Our youth. When we heard Art Bell, we were younger.. Maybe happier. Maybe he was the 'good old days' of radio for us.

Forgive me for random thoughts that seem to go on too long. But we are coming up on October. The time when EVPs would be played until the wee hours of the morning. The time when ghosts would somehow be present. And this year? ....Oh this year.....

Tara

I would LOVE for Art to return to C2C or a similar radio show.   Like many of you on this site, I have so many good memories of a show that originated from a trailer in the high desert.   However, if Art returns in any format it won't be quite the same.  It'll be great, but different.  Every show is partially a product of it's time, and Art essentially had a pre-9/11 show.  Even in the late 1990's, the country was not as polarized as it is now between left and right.  Wonder if Art  would keep that out of the show.  Would he get too preachy on climate change?  Don't mind if he expressed his opinion, but hope he wouldn't become a broken record like Noory on tumeric.
When I think of Art returning to radio I think of an imaginary reunion of the Beatles, say in 1979, just before Lennon was shot.  Would they have produced a great album, of course, but it would be different.  It was no longer 1967 and music reflecting the psychedelic era would have been passe.
I think it would be somewhat the same with an Art Bell return.  Great, because of his innate talent, but different.

I've always thought that the sudden and unexpected death of his wife, Ramona, affected him so deeply that it took a lot of his passion for radio. Her death occurred in January 2006. He announced his retirement from weekend Coast in July 2007. This would coincide with your opinion of him sounding "dull, lifeless or bored" from 2007-2010 and I would agree with that assessment as well.

His shows, before that time, always sounded fresh, exciting and thought-provoking. I can't say that personally this was a happier time in my life, but I can say that listening to Art late at night gave me some company and made me happy. His shows scared the crap out of me and kept me up on occasion, but even those times I was happy to be listening. The times when I'm awake and by myself late at night I really do long for the golden age of Coast.

Very true, and while lacking the passion of the weekly broadcasts, he still made is a very good, listenable show. Until his last show. The '10 ghost to ghost show was so riddled with apathy, I often wondered if he was falling asleep at times. Art has always been professional enough to still attempt to engage his audience, but that show he was making a clear statement. He was done. I even think the "till they call my name again" statement was a setup for doing his own thing on down the road.

My take was that his performance during that show was a clear invitation for noory/premier to "suck it, and don't bother calling"..

Great points. I also have very fond recollections of the early days of Art, back when I stood freezing my 6 off in a guard shack near San Diego, while I constantly adjusted the AM radio to pick up his show drifting over the mountains. I was positively mesmerized, and forever hooked.

And while I long for those nights, what does that say about me? To be sure, It was a crazy and exciting time in my life. Perhaps you`re right. Perhaps it`s not as much about Art and the glory days of C2C, but more about Springsteen`s version of Glory Days.
