George Noory Sucks! - The Definitive Compendium

Can Noory pronounce anything correctly?

No
No
Tonight's show is actually kind of fun, but I can't help thinking how good it would be without you know who hosting.

The only song I've ever heard of by them (him?) is "Goody Two Shoes."

He started off with the Ants then went solo as Adam Ant.  I actually have his greatest hits cd.  Maybe I shouldn't admit it but I loved his solo stuff.  :P

And tomorrow night we have more Quayle.  Wasn't he on just a month ago?  Well, at least the linguistically-challenged vocal skills of Noory will be kept to a minimum.

I liked Haircut One Hundred and Elvis Costello from the British "New Wave" Period and Split Enz from Australia. Of course, Costello became much more than new wave as did Split Enz as most of Crowded House.

I'm not sure about a bunch of these as 'new wave'

1.The Bangles?  More folk rock, even on their first album
2.The B-52s?
3.Aztec Camera? Again folk rock
4.Culture Club?
5.The Cure?

That's just A,B and C

They're all good, how about The Fixx too?  Another "Stand" song was one by them called "Stand or Fall".

I only know the Fixx song (or two songs?) that is played as bumper music.  I was mostly listening to 60s oldies stations in the early 1980s that played a lot of folk rock (first several albums (actually cassettes) I bought were all Simon and Garfunkle, I believe the first non S and G cassette I bought was Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits after hearing "Like a Rolling Stone" and became familiar with Costello and Split Enz (as Crowded House, not that the membership was entirely the same) only a few years later.  Can't remember where I heard Haircut One Hundred from.

REM "Stand"  I believe they hate the song.  I kind of like it.
Burton Cummings "Stand Tall"

The New Wave, early MTV music were the sound of my high school years though I had a much broader range of interest in music.  I got into Costello a bit later when he made Spike and Mighty Like A Rose.  Early 80's was sort of a dry period for Costello after his initial success with Nick Lowe and Stiff Records.

Culture Club, The Cure and bands like a-ha and Duran Duran were part of the sub -genre of New Wave called, I believe The New Romantic Movement or something like that.

Bangles were not New Wave.  B-52's sort of came in on the crest of Punk/New Wave along with the Talking Heads though they were more a part of the CBGB's music scene along with bands like Blondie.

Yeah I was right. The New Romantic Movement. Here's a link to info on it in Wikipedia.

A couple Bangles songs on their first album, especially "UB40" were kind of new wave. I believe that album was recorded in the U.K. Jules Shear's original recording of "If She Knew What She Wants' is quite nice, though the chorus is totally cheesy.

I always regarded Blondie as a punk/disco hybrid, which is very impressive to pull off.

There's a radio station in Toronto called CFNY that played new wave music exclusively back then, it's where I heard all of these and too many others to count.  That station is rather legendary for what they once were, now they're just another modern rock station with no identity.

Here in Atlanta, all we have left are 2 classic rock stations. Both of them have rather pathetic playlists highlighting the same 200 songs over and over again.  The rest of the music stations are Top 40/hip-hop crap or country.  I spend most of my time listening to my ipod these days when I'm not listening to talk radio.  The music industry is in a very sad state.

I remember their earliest hit was a song called "Going Down To Liverpool", an homage to the Fab Four.  The music video had Leonard Nimoy as their chauffeur. He was friends with the father of Hoffs.

The real creativity is happening online and no longer on the radio.  There's an online station called Flashback Alternatives that play classic new wave, it's really good and no commercials.

"Stand and Deliver" is also the name of a godawful song by Adam and the Ants.  Again, we can blame Dave for bringing it to mind.

My goggletube-fu is weak, I was trying to find the clip where Carl says "Stand and Deliver"

But all I got were these (I think they'll work in a Dave sucks thread though):

There are a few bands I like.  Muse is one of them.  I also happen to like this lady from across the pond who is carrying the torch of rock 'n' roll.  Imelda May.

There are still a huge amount of bands, duos and solo musicians, arguably too many. I'd guess that there are still 500 albums or so released each week in the United States alone, though that includes comedy albums, classical, jazz and so on.

That is true but it is very tough for new acts to get established and they get no promotion unless they fall into traditional dance/rap/country categories.  New Rock 'n' Roll gets no airplay in Atlanta unless they cross over into Top 40.

The big problem are these huge corporate conglomerates that own the radio stations these days.  I look forward to the day when a car radio will automatically link to all the various web sites that play music or whatever.  Internet radio is great but it needs to be simplified for the automobile to a system that's familiar like the radio dial.  Too many choices is part of the problem. Where to start? I guess you could limit it to genre of music but I like variety. I do want to hear what's new but I want to have it dispersed with music I like.  Uggh.  Anyway, that's all for tonight.  Sorry to the others on this thread that we kind of got off topic but it was an interesting diversion from the suckage that is Noory. Later, NN and 136.

And by "country," you mean the abomination known as "bro-country."

I just listened to that and thought it was quite good. "We're the dandy highwaymen..." I liked their look and mix of tribal song and basic new wave beats.

Ian Dury was on that list. He was brilliant. Too bad he never took off.

here the "classic rock" station is playing mostly hair band music. with the occasional true classic rock song tossed in.4 hair band songs, then 1 zepplin (or pink floyd or something) song. then commercials. rinse, repeat.

Just heard "donkey-centaurs" on the radio.

The typical corporate metro FM rock station.  I think were down to one in my metro.  Fortunately, there's a small college in the area that still plays rock and mixes it up with more than the usual.  They even played this yesterday.

I knew I was in trouble years ago when rock became "oldies."  :'(

HAHAHA! C2C had to fess up that the Roswell Alien slide was actually a picture  mummified Indian child from a museum!
Who ever booked the guests for the show is dumber than a box of rocks! ;D As Carlo's Mencia Sez, "Dee,Dee,Dee!"

CornyCrow

Last night both guests mentioned Art Bell.  I wonder how that made Dave feel.  I wonder if he's anticipating July with dread.

VtaGeezer

I enjoyed the two "evangelicals" blathering on about the Vatican, Jesuit astronomers, Apache lore, and Sedona anomalies.  Except for Noory's silly questions, it could have been one of Art Bell's shows from the late 90's; full of half-truth psuedo-science drivel. I can't wait to hear Quayle elaborate tonight; perhaps the Vatican and Jesuits are actually controlling the Jade Helm business and they're going to make Catholics of us all by force before the mother ship arrives!

Izintit?

I am really getting sick of Noory not having an opinion on ANYTHING. I know, he`ll say it`s because he wants the guest`s perspective out there but it`s because he`s afraid as hell of losing any of his shrinking audience. Responses like "It`s possible", "praw-bab-ly" , and the always annoying " You could be right"  get more grating every time I hear them. And I only listen a couple of nights a week! George and his head full of pus needs to go back to calling himself the "Chickenhawk" (or whatever the hell it was) on small market radio.
