Brilliant and funny guy is our Jarvis. Local lad too, as is Richard Hawley.

Pulp - Do You Remember The First Time? - Reading 94

Well do you?  ;)

I still find myself singing this out of the blue from time to time. What a lot of powerful acting going on this short bit of singing, no "failure to communicate" here. Sure miss Paul Newman.

Paul Newman - Cool Hand Luke - Plastic Jesus
I'll have to see this movie.  Great clip.

He's got something special going there.  I think the boys up in San Francisco would really go for this.  Sort of a mick jagger meets the sex pistols .  Raw.  I was amazed at that crowd.  It looked like a massive pulsing algae mass.  There must be 20-30000 people there dancing and jumping in time. He keeps a personal quality throughout.  We will maybe hear of him more.

consider yourself lucky
I'll trust you on that.
I like to keep up with the new stuff but have to admit a lot doesn't do anything for me.

There are several people that post in this thread that give a great deal more thought and provide more depth than I do.

But I find so much of today's music to be very formulaic. The link above leads to a performance that is supported by a lovely voice. But is also layered with too much production, way too much hyperbolic symbolism, and just for fun, emotional angst. Seems like it is targeted for the less than 20 crowd. God knows they need something to spend their time on... too bad it is this.

Pulp aren't a new act, they have been around for over 20 years.  They had a bit of a hit in the US with Common People, but were huge in the UK, around the same time as Oasis and Blur.

Listening to a little Phil tonight.

I have only listened to a little bit of Iron Maiden, but IM sounded really similar to Thin Lizzy to me.

Many of you probably already know plenty about Mott the Hoople. Someone dumped their Mott the Hoople CD collection at the local library donation/store and I picked up 4 of their CDs for $1 each. I didn't know much about them at all until 2 days ago. Really good stuff. Jerkin Crockus, I'm a Cadillac are my favorites so far, but all of the CDs are full of good tracks. What happened to the music industry?

After I got home I learned that Ian Hunter had a solo career so I am going to look for his CDs in that bookstore next time.

You know the connection with M t H and David Bowie I take it?

The video is 94..they'd been gigging in their home city of Sheffield for a dozen years before they became nationally recognised. I used to work with a guy who'd been a drummer for them (one of many!) and said Jarvis was a fruitloop, and often laid down on the stage; the result he'd have bottles thrown at him.

Many years later, Jarvis presents a radio programme for 6 music, station run by the BBC, as does Richard Hawley. Hawley brought over Bo Diddley to do a few intimate gigs in the UK a few years ago. I also think Hawley is a better singer than Cocker..seek him out.

I only knew a little bit, but I searched and found some more of the story on the internet. Thanks for the tip.

Iron Maiden is an incredible band with a rich history. One of my all time favorites.

My daughter listens to electronic music that has to reform the neurons.  Cannot stand it because it feels like flashing lights, flesh trembling, fear anxiety.  I really don't like going there.  Probably painful to read.  Sorry bout that chief.
In contrast, These last years of war and economic stress have brought back music that soothes me, harmonies and acoustic stuff.  Its a lot like the 70's in a good way. They also have some that just brings so much energy in a good way.  I will always love the old stuff but really like finding the new.

This week I've been listening to Little Feat and loving it even more.  Fat Man, Dixie Chicken, Willing', All that You Dream...

HorrorRetro

It's not really the kind of music I'm into, but holy cow. This kid has a voice.

Love Feat(Lowell-era) and particular appeciate that basically none of their music is played on the corporate rock radio Leviathans, so it remains fresh.

"All That You Dream" being the penultimate song in the final Sopranos episode(a not so subtle reference)...great song, sums up my feelings on Noory "can't be around that type of show no more"

I'm not a musician, nor music fan enough to know if the points made are valid, but I thought this was interesting:

I didn't know much of their story and what a surprise.  I totally thought it was a different deal than it was. Frank Zappa?  I always thought we were talking southern roots.  I have always had a Waiting For Columbus album somewhere nearby.  So damn good.  I'm so over GN now, I can barely even look at the thread anymore.  Glad to know you share that with me.

I've had three babies and really, really enjoyed the process getting there, and I assure you, even with this "advanced technique", there is something really important missing.
(Note to self:  New BF not into this music.)

I didn't really know if I should put this here or on Gabor's thread...

Shatner covered this song about ten years ago. We can thank Ben Folds for this. I actually liked this album. It's a lot of fun.

Was so bummed to see my link was messed up. It's from a new Swedish band.  A compelling little fusion of ballad and quirk.  It is "What Does the Fox Say?". The ad is a take-off on the song done with Abercrombie models.  ;)

Sleeplessinca...You've mentioned a Coffee House (?) station on Sirius. Where is it, Indie Channel? Going to check it out.

I'll get back to you with that. On the road now.  It's addictive.  I think it is in the 30's though.  A touching "hey ya"..... I heard a memorable  acoustic 1979 (by the songwriter) too.gtg
