Surprise Surprise!

Trump to issue Executive Order on Thursday May 4th 2017 to ease ban on political activity by Churches!

"President Donald Trump will take executive action on Thursday to ease a ban on political activity by churches and other tax-exempt institutions as part of an order on "religious liberties", a senior White House official said on Wednesday.

Trump's executive order to mark the "National Day of Prayer" will also mandate regulatory relief to religious employers that object to contraception."

It's no "Surprise", it's a Campaign Promise...

Trump reverses LBJ IRS Church Tax Regulation

Thursday in the Rose Garden at the White House, President Donald Trump said declared freedom to be “a gift from God” before signing an executive order to protect the tax-exempt status of churches and religious groups if they engaged in politics.

Trump said, “We remember this eternal truth. Freedom is not a gift from government. Freedom is a gift from God. It was Thomas Jefferson who said the God who gave us life gave us liberty. Our Founding Fathers believed that religious liberty was so fundamental that they enshrined it in the very First Amendment of our great beloved Constitution.”

I don't think it is ok at all. I have been pushing for a clean repeal since day 1.

I hope it doesn't pass in the Senate.

Kinda like the 180 turn that happened with your poll results.  :D

Just admit defeat already. If you're still a Democrat, why?! What do you actually stand for (not against)?

I'm trying to goad myself into accepting this piece of crap that passed the House but I'm not happy about it.  I agree with you.  Full repeal.  I'm really pissed off that the Drudge Report is touting this as a repeal.

No, this doesn't do away with Obamacare, starr.  That is what the Republicans and Trump would like us to think.  The exchanges are still in place and if you quit having insurance, you still have to pay a penalty though they don't call it that.  It's a shell game.  The only part I think we should keep is allowing those with pre-existing conditions to have health care with no additional penalties.  This plan scuttles some of that but doesn't scuttle most of Obamacare.

I do not see how this lowers costs or increases market competition. It seems it has the chance to be cheaper for younger folks at the expense of people in their 50's and 60's.

Under Obamacare, the rates for older people could only be 3 times as high as the lowest rates. Now it can be 5 times as high. Meaning younger rates will probably go down some and older rates will probably go up some.

Changing the tax credits based on age sucks as well. Changing it based on income is one thing. Changing it based on age seems to be age discrimination.

They just need to repeal it.

I really hope it stalls in the Senate.

As a millennial I know a good number of people who don't have insurance, and none of them have paid the fines. None of them have been hassled by the IRS, either. Completely anecdotal, but go figure.

My understanding is that the IRS was accepting filings without ACA disclosures. I'm not sure why people would voluntarily pay a fine if they could have just filed and not disclosed.

If you file electronically, I think there is just a box you check. No documents required unless of course you get audited.

I've learned to not pay much attention to bills while they are going through debate, passing the House, passing the Senate, being changed in reconciliation, then finally signed.

Even then, I'm not going to read them, I wait until various outlets go through it and provides the highlights, and see what various media end up bitching about, and what is then litigated.

I don't think they have to do a repeal and replace all at once - although it would have been preferable, and they should have had it ready to go on Day 1.  If it's easier to get the votes, it can be done in steps.

Personally, it doesn't affect me - unless my taxes get used to fund others. I belong to a faith-based health sharing network that is exempt from Obamacare and I will be in this plan until I switch to Medicare.

I haven't paid too much attention, but my desire has always been to limit the size and influence of the federal government.

I agree we need to wait and see what the final bill ends up being, but this sure seems to be a bunch of duct tape on top of a clusterfuck that was Obamacare.

I would rather see a full repeal, and then a deadline set for a replacement plan that doesn't try to shoehorn in to the existing framework.

I recall something about Trump telling the IRS to not pursue the penalties in an Executive Order, although I don't recall the details.

As far as getting audited, most people get a notice when there is some discrepancy in their tax returns as compared to the information the IRS has.  It's rare for most people to get a full blown audit.  I think the IRS won't be sending notices regarding ObamaCare tax penalties, and would only ask about it in an office audit when they call the person in for something else.

Who Wins and Who Loses in the Latest G.O.P. Health Care Bill -NY Times

Winners

High income earners: The bill eliminates two taxes on individuals earning more than $200,000 or couples earning more than $250,000

Upper-middle-class people without pre-existing health conditions

People who wish to go without insurance

Large employers

Medical device companies, indoor tanning companies and a few other medical industries

Losers:

Poor people

Older Americans, in most states: The Insurance companies would be allowed to charge a 64-year-old customer five times the price charged to an 18-year-old one, to cite the most extreme example. The changes in the subsidy formula would also require older middle-class Americans to pay a much larger share of their health insurance bill.

People with pre-existing health conditions, particularly in some states

Wouldn't it be simpler to pass a law that says an insurance company cannot ask for gender, age, or medical history allowing the market to establish a rate that caused everyone to share the burden?  Wouldn't this be the socialist ideal?

It is amazing that my health sharing plan is 1/5 the cost of Obamacare and has 1/10 the deductible, yet you pay the same no matter your sex or age.

Wouldn't it be simpler for Trump and the Republicans to just repeal Obamacare and go back to a private market based system? And repeal Medicare too? Don't even pretend to want the government in the healthcare business?

And let's drop social security and all subsidies

I think they should repeal Obamacare and go back to a private market based system.

As far as Medicare, I have paid Medicare taxes for over 40 years expecting to have that insurance when I turn 65. If they want to refund all my tax money, with interest, then I am fine with them getting out of the health care business all together.
