AM Radio Hosts with Voices I Hate

Started by Ruteger, November 03, 2010, 03:41:09 PM

Ruteger

1) Noory (Elmer Fudd/slurred speech, cannot pronounce anything properly. IQ < 90)
2) Clark Howard (thought he was gay. Nice guy, great advice on $, but that voice)
3) Neil Boortz (sounds like he has coughed up phlem and has not spit it out yet)
4) Billy "Great American" Cunningham (why does he yell in that monotonous tone? And why does he deserve the title "Great American"?)

How do these people get on the air?  :-X

The General

Wow, I know.  Right on.

Clark Howard, I enjoy, but his voice and delivery SUCK!  He sounds like he's trying to choke back a giddy little schoolgirl laugh all the time.  And the Great American guy is such an assclown.  And while I can't stand Noory, it's not his voice that bothers me.

I have to add Mark Levin to this list.  He gets excited and starts sounding like he inhaled helium.  How can anyone listen to his show for more than five minutes?  He's a phony anyway.

The worst is some of the local AM talk here in my neck of the woods.  There's one guy here in Seattle that sounds like Kermit the Frog but he's all slurred and stupid sounding like he spent all morning huffing glue.  He's TORTURE to listen to.

C110

Yeah....I thought Clark Howard was gay too when I first heard his voice years ago.  He is very smart and has great advice.  I do think that his enthusiasm is very genuine and he enjoys helping people.  I think he is a nice guy and if you were to meet him in person he would probably be quite friendly.  I would much rather listen to him than "beans and rice, rice and beans" Dave ramsey.  He gives the same advice to the same questions over and over and over again and it is all common sense advice.  What a bore.  Also, I cannot stand his voice especially when he laughs.

I can't stand to listen to any political talk radio.  I hate all of their voices and antics.  I hate that they all claim to be great Americans and preaching for a better America.  In reality political talk show hosts are in it to make a big fat paycheck.  Plain and simple they are just entertainers.

I do like Art Bell and Ian Punnets' voices and did enjoy Barbra Simpson's voice as well.

I like the voice of Bill Handle...He has quite a entertaining and informative show.

I also like the voice of...or should I say voices of Phil Hendrie.  He is very talented and funny!

C110

Oh, and while we are talking about voices.  Anyone ever notice that James Von Praugh and the veteran porn star Ron Jeremy have the same sounding voice???

I never did notice that, buy now that you mention it  . . .

I have to say that Ron Jeremy seems to have more integrity.

C110

I agree with you 100% EvB.  They both made a career out of screwing people.  I have much more respect for Ron Jeremy than Von Praugh.

there's a guy in st. louis on 97.1 FM named dave glover.  if you're looking for a hideous radio voice, check him out.

C110

I lived in St Louis about ten years ago and would listen Dave Glover.  I didn't think he was that bad back then but maybe he has changed.

i think he's actually a good host, but it's just his voice that grates on me.

dianne rehm is kind of bad (NPR) but she had a stroke or something so its excusable.  she's sharp as a tack though and won't take any bullshit from any guest.  ever.

Ruteger

Noory actually pronounced "nuclear" as "nuc-u-lear" a couple nights ago. This guy is Homer Simpson on steroids! Not that am suprised, mind you.

Todd Schnitt, the no-talent, afternoon drive-time host of the "Schnitt Show" based out of Tampa. If I accidentally hear even the "Sch" sound as it passes through his weaselly lips, I'm grabbing the radio dial with one hand and reaching for a Valium with the other.

Ruteger

Diane Rehm. Ghastly. When I first heard her, I thought she was like 106 years old and on her death-bead.

looked her up on youtube.  holy crap.

It is true that she had a stroke, that she is still mentally sharp and is absolutely unlistenable*. She is like the Andy Rooney of radio, nobody has the heart to let her go.

*not a real word but it should be

Wow, nail on the head... A few years ago here in L.A., Hannity FORCED KABC to carry Levins pre-taped show. You couldn't even call in to challenge him... all to bump off a local guy who was the one guy who got people UNDER 60 to listen KABC... they've never been the same, I think they've been in 4th place now for a while... Thanks Levin!

Local L.A. legend Marc Germain, aka Mr. KFI, aka, Mr. KABC, and TBH, if I didn't follow Germain, i would've never found Art Bell so... he kinda holds a special place in my heart. When I was in high school, he was my late show...

QuoteLA Observed reported that the difficulty was that KABC management wanted to add a second hour of the ABC-syndicated Mark Levin show, which would have pushed the highly rated Mr. KABC show to an 11 PM - 2 AM time slot, a situation which Mr. Germain found unacceptable.

i also dislike hannity... but probably not for the same reasons you do.  i agree with 80% of what he says, but the problem is there's no originality behind the guy.  there's no serious intellect behind what he does.  he delivers nothing to the conversation that you can't already get elsewhere.  i've said it 30 times on this forum... why listen to hannity when you can listen to rush?  why?

Ruteger

I like Mark Levin. As a Conservative, I agree with alot of what hey says. Yeah, he gets over-excited, but I think that is a marketing gimmick to differentiate himself. And I do admit it puts me off. Is it sincere? Not sure. But has anyone read "Liberty and Tyranny"? An excellent book. You will not get that level of intellectualism from Noory, Obama, or anyone else.

i have heard nothing but good things about that book.  i'm going to have to grab the audiobook version of it, but i hope levin isn't reading it.

Ruteger

I have the audiobook. It is not read by Mr. Levin, but the intro is as most e-books are these days. He does not yell or become excited, so I am sure you will enjoy it :)

Lynn Samuels. Terrible New Yawk accent.

Quote from: b_dubb on November 04, 2010, 09:05:03 PMdianne rehm is kind of bad (NPR) but she had a stroke or something so its excusable.  she's sharp as a tack though and won't take any bullshit from any guest.  ever.

She claims it's because she took Tylenol. She's had a massive campaign against the drug ever since. There is, as you might imagine, considerable dispute about her claim - while she clearly had an "event" of some sort, the likelihood it was from acetaminophen is tiny, and even if it was - well, bad things happen sometimes. I'm not willing to ban peanut butter because a tiny fraction of people might have a reaction.

I am a huge Mark Levin fan - discovered him by accident on Internet streaming (can't receive his show where I live). He's a great legal mind and Constitutional scholar, and has his own legal foundation challenging and bringing lawsuits fighting for the original intent of the Consitution (Landmark Legal Foundation).

His rants are real, and not part of a "schtick" as some might believe - he has noted this numerous times on the radio, and occasionally tells the following story:

Levin broadcasts his show from "the bunker" which is his broadcast equipment set up in an office in his basement. He has mentioned that, in the past, when he'd go off on one of his rants, his wife would get upset, and start pounding her foot on the floor above, to get him to settle down (I think that's hilarious). Levin is really just a regular guy - he loves McDonald's hamburgers and fries, does not eat at fancy restaurants, or mingle with famous people, unless he has to. He says he just a homebody who has a distaste from the limelight, and is a regular Joe in real life.

He lives in an upscale neighborhood in northern Virginia, but nothing tremendously fancy (I've seen his house), but he does admit to one financial indulgence: what he calls the "Batmobile." It's obviously a fancy exotic sportscar, but he will NEVER say what type, as he doesn't want to be recognized or followed in public. He admits this is his one extravagance. I heard him slip one time on the radio with a female caller in which she correctly guessed his car and he stumbled around and switched topics quickly. He owns a Lamborghini - not sure of the model.

He is also a tremendous dog lover - to the extreme. He wrote a best-selling book called "Rescuing Sprite" a few years back, about his ordeal with losing his beloved dog to some disease. He has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to local shelters and animal rescue organizations. I'm not a pet owner, so I can't relate to that type of devotion. During Thanksgiving week this year, he took the week off to be with his dying dog, who is in his last days. He gets pretty emotional about it on-air, and allows many callers to tell their pet stories.

He is also an unabashed supporter of those who protect us - police/fire/military... he has become personal friends and stays in contact with families who have lost a son or daughter while protecting us.

My only qualm with Mark, is his tendency to sometimes cut off callers who are even agreeing with him - he tends to get impatient, but I realize that's mostly due to his intellect and being a lawyer. He tends to get short-fused with people who can't make their point quickly without rambling. I have every show of his archived since 2007-present (wrote a little script which downloads them automatically for me) so I can listen to the show without commercials - cuts down the listening time by roughly 33%.

I also HIGHLY recommend his first book, Men in Black: How the Supreme Court Is Destroying America. A tremendous history lesson on horrific decisions made by the Supreme Court. I may repost a post I made on another forum regarding one particularly nauseating case that defies logic.

Did I hear someone mention audiobooks? I have his books on eBooks (original and PDF versions) and both also in audiobook. Why, in fact, here's Liberty and Tyranny:

One last thought - while I generally enjoy "dark" themed forums, the default gray color for text is extremely difficult to read, as are, quite frankly, the other defaults.

May I suggest any combination of "limegreen," "orange," "yellow," and "white" which would make it so much easier to read everything here. Just my opinion of course. You can also define these colors by literally using the above words/nomenclature, rather than defining them by their hex equivalent.

hey, thanks for the downloads!

regarding the color... i have just spent the last hour trying to figure out how to set the default post color to white.  however, i'm having no luck figuring it out.  i will have to try again when i'm a bit fresher.

keep in mind that as things are currently configured, when you change your post's color to white, it can not be seen when someone is quoting your text since it blends perfectly with the background in the wysiwyg editor (unless you toggle over to html view).

Older thread here I know.  But I think my least fave radio voice was tugjob Mike Siegel.  Man, why did that voice piss me off?

Also, do any of you all remember once when Noory explained something about how he started to read, or talk, at a late age because he had some kind of bifurcated tongue?(?)  I think he might have mentioned surgery also.  Did I dream this?  I felt sorry being pissed at his bungfuddlement, for a while.
