Because I'm such a wonderful husband, I made my wife and kids drive with me on a five hour round trip to go pick up a riding lawn mower today, Mother's Day.   I had arranged the meeting on Friday, and I was supposed to get to this guy's house about noon.  He was to be at work by 2pm, so it had to be done before then.   Because I had to rent a trailer to pick it up, and I was only allotted a 6 hour window by uhaul, we left early and made good time, arriving at 11am.  When I drove up to the house there was a big box van in the driveway, the lawn mower was off to the side, and there was a car parked in front of the house with some guy in it.   I parked my vehicle, got out and went up to the house - a nice new two story house in a new neighborhood.   Apparently this guy didn't need it anymore because its one of those neighborhoods where houses are just stacked next to each other and it was clear the yard was too small for a riding mower.   Anyway, the front door was open and I could see right down the hall into the living room.   I rang the doorbell and called out "Hello??"  No one answered.   In a couple seconds, the next door neighbor opened his door and said to me "Hey, his brother is in the white car parked in front of the house."   Uhm, okay, I thought.   So I walked up to the car and said brother rolled down the window.  I asked him, "Hey, am I supposed to talk to you about this lawn mower or something?"  And he said "What lawn mower?"  I said "That one that's parked over on the side of the house, I'm here to pick it up like I arranged with your brother."    He said to me "Can you come back in a couple of days?"   I was kind of upset with this because I just drove a couple of hours to get there and had to rent the trailer and all - this wasn't going to be an easy request to fill.   I said "Well, I'm from such and such a couple hours away" and he said "My brother committed suicide last night."   I went over to tell my wife, and as I am telling her what this guy just told me, some guys dressed in tyvek outfits came out carrying medical waste bins.    True story.   So Happy Mother's Day.

Spent the weekend camping up by Mt. St. Helens. It's amazing how much ash is still visible. Those trees on the mesas are full-size, so it gives a bit of scale to how deep the ash is. It's a beautiful area.  I'm planning a helicopter trip over the lava dome the next time I head over there.  That should be a fun photo shoot.  Unfortunately, it rained and clouds hid most of the mountain while we were up there.

We stayed at Toutle River RV park. It's a really good park. It's sandwiched between I-5 and very busy RR tracks, so it's not quiet, but it's very clean and close to Castle Rock and the Mt. St. Helens area.

Ha, yes, that's my garden. Well, it's one of the gardens. I've expanded since then.  That was from last season. I'm a little behind this time around, but I have peas, kale, spinach, radishes, Japanese eggplant, burgundy beans, various lettuce, beets, carrots in the ground now. I also have a bunch of Cherokee purple tomatoes I grew from seed that need to be put in the ground as well as a few tomatillo. Also have strawberries, three varieties of blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. Tree wise, I have two apple trees, a plum tree, and a cherry tree.  I try and preserve all I can.

There's very little snow until you get to the final climb up to the observatory, but the roads were perfectly dry all the way up.  It's a beautiful drive with several very nice rest stops with full restaurants/wine as well as several state parks.  The first rest stop is on the right side of the road with a state park on the left, and it's more of a small museum-type place with exhibits from the eruption. They have a small theater and show a film about the eruption three times an hour, I believe.
