Christianity has its roots in Zoroastrianism (and Mithraism which came before Zoro). Christmas should actually be in March this time of year, but I'm glad it's in December because that coincides with the winter solstice and we need a winter joy fest as much as possible so I ain't complainin.

Yeah - it's a mish - mash, but keep in mind that despite what commercialism has done, EASTER is still THE # 1 Christian high holy day. 

As for the Zoroastrian/Christian connection -- I don't know as much a I wish i did -- but I do vividly recall this: According to cannon - when Zoroaster';s followers asked when they ould kow their lord hard returened,m  - they were told:  "THERE WILL BE A STAR IN THE EAST, FOLLOW IT, AND THERE YOU WILL FIND ME, CRADLED IN STRAW."

happy new year anyway, makes sense to have it now when everything starts growing again.

the western tradition of new year has prolly come from the sun dying in the sky on 21st december, which doesnt happen nearer the equator. this is remnants of the old religion with christianity grafted over it. similarly, deciduous trees that withstand the cold in the northern hemisphere were christmas trees because they were the only decent thing alive in the winter. thats why they eat pine cones and firs in scotland at christmas, as well as the excellent drink 'hot woody'.

The Israelites aren't related to Zoro as far as I have read. But we're the cradle of civ for a reason Honestly, I feel sorry for the Hebrews now days. Thanks for all the nice words everyone. I actually don't think of this as a new year. It's more like a "New Day". The literal translation is "NEW DAY" (NOROOZ in Persian.... yes Persian not FARSI).

I hate the regular new year time anyway. It's cold and dark and crappy. I prefer this time of year because it's so much more civilized and sunny

In English, the right reference is PERSIAN, not Farsi. The best analogy is the German/Deutsche usage. You wouldn't refer to the German language in English as Deutsche. Some Arab hating Iranians even go so far as not using F at all in Persian. Why? Because Arabs don't have P in their stinking alphabet. This is their "revenge" for the Arab invasion over 1000 years ago. LOL. So, instead of saying Farsi, they say Parsi. THis is the root of PERSIAN.

As for Clooney, his Persian skills were really bad. He called the sheikh looking guy who picked up the ammo a "son of a goat" according to the subtitles. However, he didn't say any such thing. Son of a goat would be "Madar boz". Iranians do not say this. We say things like "Madar jende" = son of a prostitute or "Madar sag" = son of a dog/bitch. Son of a goat doesn't make any sense at all.

He called the Iranian guy "bobby" which is probably short for "Babak", a popular, nice Persian name.... actually Iranians use that nickname too for it so that was cool. But he was also calling the guy "Arash" which is a name too so I don't know what the hell was happenin in that scene. I still don't get that scene. The girl who put on frumpy clothes over her tight sexy ones is accurate. I've done that myself in Iran. At any party you will see a huge dump of "manteaus" or long, smock type jackets or shirts as well as veils. You don't have to change your shoes like that girl did though.

Iran is a fun place, but it's so god damn sad. People do lots of drugs and they want to escape.... either with drugs or education. Many of them want to come here and Europe. But they don't want to bother saving their own society. I don't blame them ONE bit, because the US and England and Russia determine whether it's appropriate or not

In the copy I have it is translated as " son of a dog" they must have found their error or someone pointed it out rather.

As for the countries you named ruling on what is acceptable you're right 100% but I think that all countries and cultures do that sadly as well.

It's funny that they translate it literally. "son of a dog" should just be "son of a bitch". We don't have a word for a female dog (that I know of). Also, he doesn't even say dog, or SAG. Don't know really. That line just doesn't make sense in that scene. If they really wanted to be literal, they could have said "Mother Dog"..... insulting moms isn't just an American thing..... "so fat, she has her own zip code".....

OK I'm Iranian but I don't know all the thousands of history on this subject. All I know about the Jooos and Eyeranians is that we bailed their asses out and sent them back home. Then they messed it up again and now they want our asses. My HS US history teacher said "history is just a big soap opera". I think it's just about asses and asses.

I just read the most amazing essay by a writer from Nigeria called Thiong'o. He turned post-colonial studies on its head.
