The conventions are like a court room. The Republican ones looking like the jury, judge, and lawyers- older, mainly white, and older or avid watchers because most people with a job get to get out of jury duty, so often only older retired folks show up. The Democrat ones look also like a court room: lots of lawyers, blacks and Hispanics, crazy/homeless people, and lots of public employees. Who besides political hacks, newsmen, or retired people would have time to travel to some other city for a week for a convention? Most normal people would need to be at work, or if they have a week off, do something more fun or take a vacation.
Though this time admittedly the conventions are more interesting due to the divisive candidates in both Parties.

I like your court room take on the conventions.  Do you happen to know why the Republican convention is held before the Democratic one?  Is it a coin toss or do the challengers always have to go first?  The reason I ask is because if both conventions are successful (without drama, interruptions, riots on the street) the last one to be aired will be freshest in the undecided voter's minds.  Seems like the last couple of presidential conventions have been started with the Republicans.

Indeed.  At the end of the day, none of this matters anyway.  Hillary could walk out on stage next week, bite the head of a bat,

I don't know. I sure various 'political operatives' and pollsters try to figure out the angles about timing. I would imagine there are arguments on both sides. Go first while people aren't quite yet sick of all the politics and 'spin.' And others using your argument sayings go last and 'be the last in the mind of viewers' and chance to respond to the other convention. Also a matter of booking, planning, security, etc. So, in short, I don't know.
