I tried raising pigeons once, but all they ever carried was disease and vermin.    I've had much better luck with racing pangolins.

You might want to reconsider you view, regarding carrier pigeons for something like, oh I dunno, the grid going down?

You're thinking of the passenger pigeon, I believe.

When I was a youngster living in a rural Ohio, one of our neighbors raised racing pigeons.  He kept them, at least fifty or so, in a large coop in his back yard.  A gaggle of them would seemingly randomly take to the air, fly a wide sweeping arc around the area, then return to the coop.  Pigeon feces frequently wound up all over our property, including on clothes drying on the clothes line, car windshields, plants in our small garden, the house, and on a couple occasions, us.  He kept them well into his 70s, giving them up only after suffering a stroke.

I believe the pigeon was introduced to North America via Europe/France. Although i could be wrong.

i never thought about this subject. It would be pretty cool to send messages via a bird. How far can they fly and how do you train it to fly where you want it too. Also can a guy just have one bird or do you need a flock?
