Music of the Spheres. The perfect harmonies created by the friction between the moving spheres of Greek (and later Christian) cosmology. It was originally a Pythagorean theory, expounded by Plato (Republic 10. 11) but rejected by Aristotle (On the Heavens 2. 9. 12). Boethius (On the Principles of Music) laid out the relations between the music of the spheres which is inaudible to human ears (musica mundana), the harmonies of a correspondingly well-ordered human life (musica humana), and the music of instruments (musica instrumenta constituta): humans mediate between the perfect harmonies of the heavenly spheres and the potential chaos and disorder of the lower worlds. Although the Copernican revolution destroyed the cosmology, the underlying idea of attainable harmonies persisted, as can be seen, e.g., in Thomas Browne (1605â€"82), Religio Medici.

Wasn't this the ingredient that was causing people to go insane and lose their vision and such? I thought that's why it was eventually banned.

That was the rumor that caused several countries to ban it.

But I have doubts. The stuff is bottled at a very high proof, I'm guessing if you drank a lot of it in the non-traditional manner (that is straight and not watered-down) you would get disorientation, etc. Also, just being a long-term alcoholic can can DTs etc if in withdrawal etc.

Synchronicity! I was just at a supermarket style liquor store the other day and was going to buy some because I've never tried it before but they had some decent single malt on sale and so I went that way.

Likely you made a better choice going with the whisky, unless you like bitter tastes. Also, I could be wrong- never bought it here, but when I was younger there were "rumors:" like absinthe was legal in Louisiana and even that "real," supposedly with some illegal ingredient or something, "Jagermeister" could only be found (in the States) there. I think the chemical that wormwood might be banned in the stuff you can by here (or at least very much diluted. I think also the alcoholic proof is lower.) I know some years ago in Czech distillers would brag on high-levels of 'thujone' (marketing due to the legend and rumors) and the stuff was strong (much higher proof that most whiskeys.) I over indulged once and did notice a painting in my room looked odd and slightly shimmering. But no real hallucinations. And not a fun hangover.
