There's a lot of things in this world that I don't understand and one of them is why anybody would choose to live in an area frequented by tornadoes.

Cause some of the best farming land is in tornado alley.

Uncle Duke

Saw this tornado as it went over our house, just minutes before it touched down 4-5 miles east of us.

Hey, Duke, I was living in Springfield, Ohio when that monster hit. I had track practice that day, and needless to say, we took the day off. I drove through Xenia a few days after and I don`t think i saw two bricks on top of each other. Like the town had been nuked.

Uncle Duke

FtF-

We lived on the boundary between Beavercreek and Xenia, had a Xenia mailing address but went to Beavercreek schools.  We'd been in our basement, but I walked out just for a minute to see what the weather looked like back to the west.  That's when I saw that enormous, almost black cloud.  The tornado hit Xenia shortly after that, as I recall first impact was in a housing development (Lanewood?) southwest of downtown proper.  It cut a huge swath through town, but thankfully did not hit the hospital.  It was at least a week before I got into town, the destruction was unbelievable.

I am so glad that you, Uncle Duke and FightTheFuture, were protected from this devastation. ;)

Fertilized by dead things killed in tornadoes.

This thread is causing me some PTSD symptoms.  Woodstock Ontario Canada August 7, 1979, dualing F4's are etched into my brain at up to 260mph/418kph and a groundpath one mile wide making it one of the largest tornados in Canadian history.

These people are survivors from the hamlet of Oxford Centre, the Mom of my friend is pictured

One of them approached my house from the North, while the other landed just after my house to the East and then destroyed Oxford Center which is just down the road.  I remember telling my Mom that we had better get out and stake up the sweet corn in the garden as we watched out of the kitchen window, then the corn was gone and it got real loud and there was this really black thing and then Mom grabbed me and we got down to the cellar.
It got louder then really quiet, we were OK, but alll to the East of us was trashed.

My best friends(we ended up going through Basic Training together) leg was broken as his family got to the center of their house at the top of the stairs to their basement before their house was taken off its foundations. All that was left was the cement block part of the center of the house where the stairwell was.  If they were 10 feet in any direction they would have been taken away. Their house was literally cement foundation and then a room about 10 feet tall 15 feet wide and 15 long made of cement block was all that protruded up above the top level of the foundations.  A piece of flying debris struck my buddies leg, but his sister, Mom and Dad and their friends 2 kids who were visiting were all unscathed physically.
I was 4 year old at the time.

Mother nature was pissed that day.

Every state can have tornadoes....

Pecos Hank is one of the top meteorologists and photographers in the business.  In this video he mentions that farmers would rather face 10 tornadoes than a drought.  The destruction of a drought is far more reaching, lasts longer, and is far more expensive to recover from than tornadoes.

At the end of this video are stunning time lapse and real time shots of CGs and CCs (Cloud to Ground and Cloud to Cloud) lightning.
