I suppose the good thing about art is that it gets people talking regardless if they like it or not... I went to the national gallery with a group of other very practical minded people while we were at a convention.  One display was a string (according to the sign, it could be displayed horizontal, vertical or even diagonal.)  I wish I were joking- it was a black string / light rope that was probably bought at a hardware store for $3.  Another display was a pile of carpet underlay that we all joked that the artist probably had tossed on his lawn while remodeling when the museum curator came around and mistook it for art.  It is now displayed in the national gallery...

The point is that out of all of the really good pieces that we saw, those two were the ones that were discussed the longest...

No offence intended; although I admit it cannot be seen otherwise, but I cannot explain pretentious delusion. The joke is on the 'ahh yes I can see where he/she is coming from'; if they see (for example), infantile scribbling with the skill and application of a six year old child as 'art'. They really need to stop taking the lsd, unless of course it is a six year old who has created it. Game for a laugh (show in the UK in the 80's) did exactly that. Class of kindergarten kids had their paintings mounted and displayed in a gallery as the work of an up and coming artist...It was hilarious as the 'critics' wandered round making the right noises...right up until the kids wandered on and were introduced as the 'artist'..You could hear a pin drop.

Not butt hurt; just dismayed at how Lincoln was correct about fooling some of the people all of the time.

Interesting... But that does make me wonder...

If John Lennon crapped in a can, there would be a collector out there who would pay a large sum to obtain that can.  I realize that it is the "celebrity factor" that makes this fictional can of crap worth something, while I pay my city utilities every month to have them whisk mine away and decompose it.

What percentage of the cost of these cans is due to art collectors actually valuing them, what is due to the artist being known (celebrity) and what percentage is due to the idea that there will be a "bigger fool" out there next time it is to be sold?  (I can tell you that if I had the cash, I might purchase this "art" not because it has any meaning to me- but rather because the history of it shows that it will likely have a better return than most other investments in stocks or bonds...)

If I'm holding a paint brush, a crayon, or a chain saw, I'm an 'artist'.  If I'm rattling a tambourine, I'm an 'artist'.  Apparently.

Either that, or not everyone who has an instrument, slaps some paint on something, plays around with photoshop, chisels a rock, or gets a part in a school play is an artist.
