we should be fine now. for a while. i believe it's time to find a new hosting provider. sparknode has let me down too many times and caused me too much headache, going back to 2013.

i've performed a clean installation of the forum software. this might result in a couple cosmetic or functional changes here or there, and i'd appreciate it if you let me know about those, but otherwise, everything should be largely as it was.

during the course of this process, i activated polls and allowed users to move their own topics to other boards within the forum. this is because users sometimes create threads and then realize, after the fact, that they belong in a different board.

So what was the reason for the crash in the first place? I know people said that it'd happened before but I've never seen it.

i have no idea why it happened. earlier today i tried to load bellgab and instead of seeing posts about mayo or lemon laptops, i saw an error complaining that the forum software couldn't connect to the database (where all the posts/etc. are stored). i rebooted the server when i saw that, and then all hell broke loose. i've been working on this since about 6PM. coming up on midnight now. yay.

You sure you weren't being hacked? One of the lines of code I could see when I tried to reload the page when this was happening read something like <Annoy MVandeven> Sorry, I really should have cut and pasted that somewhere but that's what I thought when I read that.

heh heh, no, that's a legit script tied into the forum software's ban system. at some point along the way, a file related to that was making the system barf.
