Raymond Collishaw, a Canadian fighter pilot for the Royal Naval Air Service, scored his first victory on October 12, 1916. From Wikipedia:

The raid was against the Mauser Rifle Factory at Oberndorf, Germany. The bombers had nearly reached their target when they were attacked by six German Fokkers. Collishaw got into position to allow his observer to fire on one, and he evidently damaged it. Lt. Collishaw then turned, gained height, and fired a burst with the front gun. The Fokker dived out of control, and, according to the British crews, crashed to the ground, a total wreck. According to the German authorities, they lost no aircraft during the engagement, but it was not unheard of for combatants to attribute their losses to accident rather than enemy action.

Collishaw would survive the war and he would live to the ripe old age of 82.

Not quite a 100 years ago but they have raised Amundsen's ship "Maud" and after cleaning and repairing are going to sail her back to Norway.

Good for Norway. It's always in a country's best interest to restore it's past. Just like ours did with the H. L. Hunley.

Also out of time, (by a good 35 years) the first episode of 'I Love Lucy' aired on CBS, 65 years ago tonight.

Thanks for the question, One. Yes, I have been looking for any similarity's between this election and the one 100 years ago. So far, there hasn't been anything startlingly similar. President Wilson was running for re-election against a respected Dr. Charles Hughes. The media back then (newspapers) seems to have favored Wilson. (Lots of pro editorials by newspaper editors, etc.) Also, the political cartoons seem to have favored Wilson...like four out of every five, I would say.

Debates? There were none slated for the 1916 election. (President Wilson put the kibosh on that.) Both candidates traveled by train to spread the word. Hughes went cross country while Wilson remained on the East Coast. (I might be wrong here, but while Hughes made some speeches in San Francisco and other western states, I haven't noticed Wilson going out that far West. Perhaps he had to stay relatively close to the White House?)

As far as smear attempts, not very many actually. There was one listed on the previous page of our thread. Somebody tried to make Hughes look as if he had close ties with Germany.

Hughe's modus operandi was to go after Wilson's policies. (Some of which were fairly successful, and this would not help Hughes on Election Day.)

I will certainly keep an eye on the two dates you mentioned. As Fats Waller used to say, â€œOne never knows, do one?â€

Interesting that they stated the names of victims of crimes that I presume to be rape or molestation, but they euphemistically say "serious charge" or "assaulted" etc, back then. Even a 15 year old girl!

Note Normal Prince, lawyer, who died in the French Aero Corps, later to be called Escadrille Lafayette. It is one thing for a fresh 18 year old kid to sign up but for some older, with a career, and presumably family takes some conjones.
