You're Art, stepping away. What would you have done differently to save DMDN?

1. Hire a guard, while I transition Midnight in the Desert over to new blood. Do shows a couple times a week to keep affiliates happy, and nurture the big deals.

2. Bring in bateman, an experienced broadcaster to keep the audience subscribed while lesser experienced talent like Heather develop their broadcasting chops a couple times a week. This would allow Heather the time to grow, find her voice, and ingratiate herself to the larger audience, without the hostility of being received as a sole replacement.

3. Laugh as Coast to Coast affiliates drop nationwide.

4. Have cake and eat it too.

You can save DMDN by simply having Art Bell appear on MITD for 15-30 minutes every night.  He can just call in using Skype from a personal computer in his home (no need to physically walk over to the guest house studio where he'd be away from his family).

While the above scenario is not as ideal as having Art host MITD regularly, you at least have a carrot and stick situation to keep a sizeable audience for MITD.

Having Art Bell as a part time host on C2C AM kept me tuning in because Art Bell was still a semi-active part of that Universe.  He was even able to fill in unexpectedly when Jorch suddenly needed a day off.

Art Bell has had a number of options. I still can't believe he attempted to do a 5-day a week call in show w/ paid download. Probably the hardest thing to do from his facilities regardless of how much money he dumped into things. And he just copied what C2C was doing. The bottom line is that somewhere a long the line Art Bell quit caring about his audience and started doing things for himself first. That's the real issue... not serving your consumer base.

Thee easiest option, and the cheapest one, would have been to do a freakin' pre-recorded podcast once a week. So simple, and so cost effective, so accessible to so many people.

If a live show was absolutely necessary, do one live show a week on YouTube, just like so many other, more popular casters... WHO DON'T CHARGE FOR ANYTHING.

Quality over quantity. Accessibility over exclusivity.

If he really wanted to do the show and not put his family in jeopardy, this is what might work.

Do the show off his property somewhere like the radio station in Pahrump he owns.  This way he separates his work from his family environment.

Nobody on dmrn is ready for prime time.  Certainly not national slots competing against big media.  We all love Bateman.  He's got a polished web show with informed and interested content.  But he's not ready to slug it out with the corporate whores.  Maybe in 5 years.


It's done for now.  Just let it run out on steaming only with whoever wants to talk (like 70% of it already is)

I wouldn't have talked about anything that happened  - i wouldn't have quit -  if i had millions many have said he has  -i would have moved to vegas or something and figure out a way to continue broadcasting in a secret locations  -  people get threats  -people hire security   you can't ever let anyone terrorize  you   i'm not trying to be cut and dry  here i'm very sympathetic of arts situation and wish him  much love and support  and do feel for him but you asked what i would do .
