The Future of Midnight in the Desert and Dark Matter Radio Network
POSTED ON DECEMBER 13, 2015 IN RADIO SHOW | 5225 VIEWS | LEAVE A RESPONSE
OK folks, here’s the deal as of now…. from Keith Rowland

Midnight in the Desert

I will run Midnight in the Desert w/Heather Wade on the Dark Matter Digital Network for the next 30 days minimum. She will start in Art’s same time slot for Monday and Tuesday…

However, seeing as I’m obligated to continue feeding the terrestrial affiliate stations for the next 30 days, I’ll need to feed either Heather’s live show or replays of Art Bell’s archives, (which ever they determine the best for them yet to be decided). If I need to feed the Art Bell replays to them at 9-12, Art’s time slot,  I will have Heather do MITD from 6-9 pm PT LIVE to insure she gets to do shows for you also. If the radio stations are fine with Heather filling in for Art, we’ll keep her at 9-12 PT.

Her shows will be added to the same Time Travelers archive as Art’s shows, so your current subscription will have Art’s old shows and these new ones. It’s up to you to continue to support the show with Heather by keeping your existing subscription or signing up again for the Time Travelers subscription, now at $4.99. After 30 days, we all will evaluate the financial situation of whether we can continue. I hope the subscriber base will maintain the show. We will do our part in reducing the costs.

Other Side of Midnight

As for Richard C Hoagland’s OSOM program,  again, it’s all about finances. RCH and I need to re-evaluate our financial model and hope to come to some resolution to continue running his show on DMDN. Stay tuned for updates on this matter. He could be back on Monday night! You can still show your support by Joining Club 19.5.

Dark Matter Digital Network

It was always my intention to bring good paranormal programs to the network and as Art Bell would draw people to the station,  these shows would gain audience and attract advertisers. While Art Bell was bringing the audience, some shows received some increase in numbers and I continued to run those shows hoping for better performance.

As hard as I tried, with over two years in building the network, none of the other programs I carried were able to earn any advertising dollars to support the cost of playing the shows, let alone justify my time in producing the shows live. I had to be present in the studio during all live shows in order to connect and bring them on, monitor the sound, play the breaks, record the show and edit the replay audio files. This time took away from my day and had no financial benefit. But I did it because Art’s show was subsidizing the cost. With the leaving of Art Bell, it doesn’t seem financially viable to continue spending hours a day doing this. So I regret to not being able to produce LIVE versions of these programs after this week.

I will however for the time being, continue to play on the station stream any and all pre-recorded shows that I currently have and any of the current LIVE shows who wish to produce their own pre-recorded audio files to me for playback, on DMDN each week. But I need to have those 4 hours a day back.

The station will also revert back to a cheaper streaming solution and may be dark for some periods of time to save costs.

Finally

It is sad that incidents have taken our Art Bell away from us again…. The challenge of bringing Art back was intense and satisfying. But the Dark Matter Digital Network was created and maintained for his return. Now that he is gone… the situation will be fluid and could quickly change.  But I’m willing to get this a shot, if you are. I will update this post as I have more information.

How long do you think this will last folks?  When will Keith pull the plug One week?  Two?

If I'm Keith I'm probably:

1. Not paying for or spending countless hours monitoring that shit.

2. Never have dealings with Art ever again because I'm not going to get tangled up with a friggin' drama queen.

cweb

I thought this thread was about a novelty timekeeping device that had a skull on it.

Now I'm sad.

But to answer your question- by the new year, I expect to see DMDN having pared down to become more cost effective.

Echo

I don't think DMDN will make it 15days without Kieth replaying old shows or just outright pulling the plug.

Affiliates are dropping the show
Advertisers are leaving
Subscribers are canceling

I thought Keith already posted his near term plans for the network earlier today.
It would seem he is going to give DMDN at least 30days more since he still has affiliate and advertiser commitments that go thru then.
After 30days he will evaluate continuation based on performance of the remaining shows.
He also said he is pulling back from the more expensive server setup for Art's higher load demand, back to the cheaper server setup he had used prior to July when Art's show started.

Keith also mentioned possibly not having any more of the LIVE shows, only the pre-recorded podcast shows.
That is because Keith has an automated setup for the pre-recorded shows, but has to be there watching over everything during the live shows.
That would mean the live shows like Hoagland, Dr. J, Future Theater, Skywatcher's Radio would be gone from the network soon or they would only be played as pre-recorded shows now.
Some of the live shows are available streamed live from other networks like PSN, but Hoagland and Dr. J shows are only DMDN so they would need to find a new "lifeboat" network to be carried on, perhaps PSN or Deep Talk Radio?

Yes. That's exactly what i read too. Nobody has mentioned Military X-Files which moved over to be a DMDN show too. But it only has about 4 or 5 DMDN shows and I think has been playing replays on it's Monday night time slot lately anyway.

I guess I missed that earlier post.  So, the real question is:  after thirty days does it die?

I know I'm done with it.  Part of listening was the anticipation of the return of the drama queen.  But the drama queen left the castle and I sure ain't listening to Heather.  She was great as a producer and maybe if she did her own podcast I might check it out, but Heather filling in for Art?  Um... thank you, no.

I feel bad for Keith. Sounds like he really put in a serious amount of work. Sigh.

yup.  he's been put through the wringer on this one.

I agree about Keith.

A complete mental ass-whipping.

It's like that time, in 3rd grade, when that pyro-kid set your 5,000 toothpick model of the Eiffel Tower on fire.

All those toothpicks and glue... and time.  Up in smoke.

But at least we got a recess that lasted three and a half hours when the fire alarms went off and the firetruck came, so it was quite worth it.

Maybe Keith needs a vacation/recess right about now.

(I still like to set things on fire, but do it in controlled environments.)

One of many reasons I never subscribed, just downloaded "pirate" mp3's.  Not giving money to an unreliable although great host.

And Noory.. I won't even listen to your shit for free LOL.

PS: I'm Ipokesmot which did the first fake RC call on 8/5/15.  ;)

The whole idea was pretty cool, and even with the quirky programming it was still pretty cool.  I guess he could go to just podcasts or some kind of rolling-blackouts for bandwidth savings etc., but I dunno.  It's like the galley's main mast just snapped and we're left with a glorified rowboat.

It worked for Papillon didn't it? At least I think it did. It worked? Right. That's how I remember it anyway. I'm going to start keeping my cash in my "safe" just in case.

Hoagie needs that time slot, but with a new producer. Ian, Alvarez, or any established paranormal host would be fine as well. Art's biggest failure was not having a guest host on nights he wasn't on and a weekend show. He should have built a new host up for his inevitable departure.

"Snapped" was an appropriate choice of words.

I think Alvarez Dark is the best DM host on the roster but he's overcommitted with his pro wrestling shows.  Listened to him last night and he sounded relieved that the he can't go back to doing After Dark as recorded podcast

This was also an abnormally busy weekend of wrestling and MMA plus he's got a baby on the way. I have no idea how he keeps up with as much as he does.

Just Me

Ya that Art Bell guy fucked everything up for everyone on the dark network.

See, that's what happens when you put all your marbles in one basket and someone looses them.

Yep, DMRN just hit the iceberg.  The captain's abandoned ship and it's sink or swim for the rest.
