I have a tendency to feel sorry for her sometimes, because I honestly get the impression that she is not very smart. 

From what I can gather, Heather has had a pretty rough life and has made her own way in the world largely by her own efforts, with little to no help from family or friends; hosting MITD was a really big break for her.  I can't begrudge her that.

I do not think that Heather is necessarily a bad person, only a poor radio host, that's all, and even poor radio hosts have mouths to feed and bodies to clothe.  I hope that she is at peace with herself and is having a good time hosting the show, even if I am unable to have a good time listening to it.

The thing is, MV has assured us a couple times that she is not having a good time.  When asked how she's doing (in the conventional greeting), she nearly always says "too early to tell", as though the outcome of talking to strangers on the phone for a few hours will determine her mental state.  This last might be theater but, frankly, I don't care.  It's unnecessarily self-referential and boring.

With Art, you could occasionally sense his frustration at the banalities of conversation because (I think) he wanted to get to the topic he was interested in and felt constrained by the time, even with hours to go.  Heather seems content to wallow.  Ultimately, I don't think she's really interested in this stuff.

Even reading along here can't save it for me most nights, anymore.  Canceled my sub a few weeks ago, after feeling certain it was well and truly over with regard to Art ever even guest hosting again.  It plateaued at some point and seems to be in gradual continuing decline.

Tonight's guest lists an Associate's degree as part of his bio, for christ's sake.  That's a looong way down from Neil deGrasse Tyson and Tess Gerritsen and the like.

I'll take C2C any night, these days.  Doesn't hold a candle to Art's shows, but it's better than this sad drudgery.

Too much current affairs and the like for my tastes plus I don't like the shplit-show format.  I like to hear 3 hours when it comes to an interesting subject.

I'm pretty sure whatever Hoagland is on must be either smoked or injected.   

However, I am fully confident that Hoagland is going to end his days as either a casino greeter (what with that hair) or a poster boy for the dangers of methamphetamine abuse.

I can appreciate those concerns.  I still give Ms. Wade credit for stepping-up at the last minute when Art stepped-down from MITD, in an apparent attempt to keep things going short-term.   Beyond Heather doing anything more than short-term, though, it just isn't there for me.  MITD is no more to me and I have no illusion Art's going to return.  I just sincerely hope he gets well and enjoys his retirement and family.  Art gave us some great entertainment and I appreciate it.

Personally, I doubt if she 'stepped up at the last minute'.  Art was pushing for her on the very first show.  The audience rejected her and it seemed as though he may have had no intention of staying because by plan or by circumstance she ended up as the 'star'.  The whole thing seems so contrived to me.

Yes, I am afraid that when she is asked, "How are you doing tonight?" by listeners, Heather's lack of social skills manifests itself.  Her treating it as anything other than a polite social greeting (rather than a request for a status update on her mental and physical health) is a huge mistake on Heather's part and makes for boring radio.

Just once, I would like to hear her respond, "Fine!" and then move on to ask what the caller had to say.  If I hear Heather say, "Well, I wish I could say I was doing okay," in that faux-wistful tone of hers one more time, I am going to chew my own foot off.

Ultimately, I don't think she's really interested in this stuff.

I would give a great deal to be able to vehemently disagree with that assessment.  Unfortunately, I can't, because I hold the same view myself, even though I wish things were otherwise.

While it might be possible to fool people at a party into believing that you're having a good time, even when you're not, I don't think it is possible for a radio host to fool people night after night on the radio when those people have nothing but the sound of the host's voice to focus on. 

(At least on TV you can wave a few bums around and distract the audience that way.)

I am hoping that Heather is using this time to "put together a tape," so to speak, that would allow her to move on and, perhaps, host a show that is centered on something she does like and finds it easy to talk about.  In the meantime, it's an awkward business all around having a radio host who isn't really into her genre but who has to keep grinding it out night after night until something better comes along.

For all of his rudeness, lack of scientific credentials, and the fact that he is clearly barking mad, Hoagland, at least, almost always seems to sound as though he is having a good time hosting his show.  If only for her own sake, I wish Heather exhibited some of that same genuine enthusiasm for her own subject matter (whilst leaving any barking madness at home, of course).

After reading a lot of the post here in regards to Heather, she has had a rough life. It's interesting to read these posts because I knew her at one point in our lives and she sounds much the same. For her to do this show is like complete Nirvana. After listening to her show, she is at best when she lets down  her guard. I really understand that she is not "Art" and will never be able to replicate that feeling you got before. Heather will never quit until there is nothing more to come back to, I just really hope that she finds her own gig.
