Midnight In The Desert

I feel exploitative wanting some stories, here, but I do.  Enough of the broad strokes.  There have to be some unsettling stories in this guy's professional history.

I agree, I mean, it's worth noting that there was also a time where the institutions were doing crazy shit like prefrontal lobotomies for reasons that weren't very good. Look at Rosemary Kennedy. We need to remember that most mental illness to this day isn't all that treatable. It was way less treatable in the past. It's a very complicated issue.

There are some that are just wired to be nature's clowns. Even most "normal" people self medicate in one way or another.
Years ago my grandmother was a nurse/caretaker on a county farm. The residents were integrated in the community and they all had jobs, had purpose in life. Later things changed and it became more of a hospital atmosphere and they were given less options, more of an institution. She said those that were there for the transition had their souls sucked out of them. They no longer had a purpose in their own lives. Whatever job they had, they took pride in doing it while it may seem like a mindless task to the average person. Pretty sad since most of these people were dropped off by family never to be seen again.

Except by Scientology. 👽
If you bucks to get 'clear.' Didnt those guys also try to co-opt drug addiction recovery at some point? Get some addictive personalities into their fold?

Don't you think that Mary Jo would had survived if she could breathe underwater? Or she could have telepathically commanded her fish friends to come save her?
Teddy had a great campaign slogan,....."A blond in every pond".

Not to mention all the people committed for totally bullshit reasons, like for things that were taboo but harmless seen as "deviant", weird beliefs, gays, because they jacked off, or people just trying to get somebody they hate out of the way, etc. Back in the day you basically had every degree of weirdo housed altogether without distinction. Hell, you had alot of sanitariums that housed orphans with fucking pedophiles and the criminally insane! Yeah, that Victorian era sure was great, huh?  ::) This shit has a bad reputation for a reason, LOL.

Right. The problem is that someone who is mentally ill is mentally ill in a different way than someone else that has the same classified disease. One schizophrenic may be reachable in a completely different way than another, or not at all. I don't really know what the answer is in how to treat them, but I do know that it's not one size fits all.

Or the infamous "waitress sandwich" at La Brassierre (as I recall with Dodd.) I hope they tipped a lot. Shudder.

Much rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Here's what Mormons believe, so you don't confuse them with the much saner Scientologists...

It's a problem that is too big to take on, really. Any bit would help, but that costs money...and with elected assholes changing evey 2-4 years, nothing is consistent. Programs that start up are defunded before they can grow legs to show proven results.

There are a couple things I'd like to ask but I wormhole message probably twice a week and Heather hasn't read one of mine in weeks.  I'm actually starting to think she avoids the wormhole to force callers, cause she gets so few.  "Not reading your wormhole, right?  Give me a call."

Had she said "ban guns" yet?

Yeah, exactly. What was crazy 50 years ago, in some cases, is fully reasonable today because attitudes have changed. Much more so than 150 years ago. And, you're right, it was religion-driven attitudes in the Victorian era that drove that sort of thing. The outlook on mental health in the 20th century was not so informed.

She wouldn't dare.  It's the opposite of what Art believes.  He's already told her what to think about guns.

You sure about that? Faking your death is a great way of preserving your secret identity as an Atlantian princess.
