My niece took out student loans to attend an elite private university to get a degree so she could teach kindergarten. She wants to be the best kindergarten teacher ever. She worked every summer, lived frugally and moved back home after graduation. She got a job teaching kindergarten and continued working summers. She paid off all of her student loans in 3 years by living at home, living frugally and working her ass off in the summer. It is 90% personal responsibility and setting your priorities.

Well, I've taught on the university level on and off over the years, from full time to adjunct. I barely made a living wage, and these were good colleges! When/if I still teach now it's because I like the course, it's almost a loss-leader for me. Oh well.

I had a professor that used to joke that hour for hour after all the prep, she made about the same as if she worked at Taco Bell.

On the other hand, my grade school PE teacher retired after 30 years with an $89,000 a year pension. 30 years of "yup, throw that ball around."
