They used to have a proof of concept breeder reactor that could process spent fuel but it was shut down long ago. The problem is even if you build a processing plant, you have the transportation problem.

All I can say is I wish my summertime monthly bill was only $300.  Sometimes it goes up to as high as $450 during the summer.  It drops down to about $100-$150 during the winter.

So if someone lives close to a reactor, what can a person do for better protection besides moving?

I've heard radiation fills in gaps where nutrients are low, like I think if you are low on calcium, strontium enters.  If you are low on iodine, something else enters, I can't remember what.  So, take a multi-vitamin and make sure it is digested well (you'll know, if things turn out normal in the loo).  Take enzymes if it helps digest the vitamin and consider liquid vitamins if it helps you get the vitamin down.  Read vitamin ingredients - you get what you pay for.

If you take a hot bath which has a cup of baking soda in it and a cup of sea salt, and then wrap a blanket around yourself and sleep it off, experts say radiation will exit through your sweat.  You can do this anytime, but especially if you have radiation poisoning symptoms like swollen lymph glands with no other reason - You can Google the other signs of radiation poisoning.  Swollen lymph glands can be a sign of many things, but could be exposure.

Seaweed will probably take radiation out of your body, so powdered kelp probably does too.  Of course, the ocean is polluted, especially since the Japan disaster.  But, I still like roasted seaweed.  It is a vegetable, alkalinizes your system, assists the colon, and according to my calculations is not high in salt even though it tastes very salty.  Eating a couple roasted seaweed snack packs is way better than eating chips, and tastes great.

You can Google other foods that take out radiation - I think apples are one, because of the pectin.  There is another food higher in pectin, but I can't remember which.  There are pectin pills.  I think pectin is good for eyes, too.

I think sweating through exercise or sauna helps too, but be sure to cool off the way the instructions say!

The people who would know more about radiation removal would be the Japanese, because of Hiroshima.  I think they believe in pulling toxins out of the soles of the feet with charcoal masque things.

Yes, Dave is somewhat of a lefty, Chef, but he did make the Mother of All Points, and that's that the gov't can't be trusted. I'm quite possibly the most free-market libertarian person on BG, but I thought Dave was making some fairly thoughtful and reasonable arguments. Might be time for a new Nuke thread in Politics.
