All he said was that the world powers would forget their differences and come together to protet the earth if we faced a global threat from aliens. He was making a point taht the people of the world could drop their differences if they faced a common threat.

But you know....even moreso...he was making a political statement. If he knew that, say, much of the UFO thing is a psych-op and a left over form of the cold war, then he may well have been 'shooting a bullet' across the bow of the USSR. And right in front of the UN, no less.

I mean really, it's a president...he's not an idiot. There's far more politicking involved than I think we know.

That's a common misunderstanding.  The isotope that we can make with our current facilities is highly unstable.  But according to the best physicists working on superheavy element nucleosynthesis (a team in Dubna, Russia), there appear to be some neutron-rich isotopes on the "island of stability" that we can't create yet.  Their longevity is unknown, but some models show very long half-lives.

I've heard a little about the idea of the "island of stability, but really haven't had the chance to do a lot of studying up on it. I'd like to know more about what properties the elements on the "island" might have, and what they could be used for.
