Who here's going to jump into the VR revolution?

So while I assume the initial offerings from Oculus and others will be pretty primitive and that it will take several years for anything like true, immersive VR to get up and running, excitement is running high and big hardware and software vendors are investing billions in it. Anyone here planning to take the plunge early next year when the initial offerings hit the market?

I will, but only if the VRSE is as believable as the OBSE I've been having lately...

This post mayhaps be too soon.

If the 'S' in the above acronyms stands for Sensory, I think that answer is yes, or soon will be, since presumably porn will drive VR technology development very hard. Get it? Porn? Drive it very hard? Anyway, porn has driven everything from VHS to DVDs to HD, since both the number of pervs and the extent to which they paddle pud is limitless. So soon I'm sure we'll all be able to connect a Schlongmaster 7000 to our things when donning our Captain Video VR helmets, and diving into some Ultra HD, fully immersive arse. Get it? Immersive?

Do you think the VR is new?

Boy, do I remember this movie. My geek friends and I excitedly went to see it 'cause it was made by Douglas Trumbull, special effects master wot had done the special effects in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the official spiritual sci fi epic of geeks of my generation.  ???

I'm watching it again.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that computer technology really started an upsurge in the mid to late 80s and has been accelerating ever since.

Yeah, well, CompuServe and Prodigy, the first two commercial internet providers came along then. I was one of the early dial-up geeks then, in the mid 80s, with a CompuServe account. I remember people playing the first online video games, which weren't even video, of course, but simply text based, and making heavy use of imagination. CompuServe had a baseball game that you could play with others. I guess it was like a turn-based thing. There were great text-based games like Planetfall. And chatting was the thing, more than anything else, that got everyone excited and made people want to get online. It was the age of the BBS. The ability to post messages like we're doing now, or hang out in chat rooms, really drove the popularity and proliferation of the internet. We are social animals, after all.

I am going to get one. I think it looks like fun.

Yeah, I'm excited, too, I'm mainly just concerned that these early models may either give me headaches or lead to eye or vision problems. I think it may take a while before they work out kinks like that. Ironically, kinks, albeit virtual ones, are one my main motivations for buying such a device. :-0

I'm blind in one eye and, as such, have no depth perception.... I think VR is going to be very disappointed for the mono-sighted.
