Would this be possible in the future as a premium perk for members?

I'm guessing bandwidth is the reason why there isn't video to Art's show.

So how about combining audio to a recorded split screen video of Art and his guest after the show is over and then make that edited video available later.  How hard would that be to do?

I know that would get Art's show more new members.

I might end my ban on PayPal to become a member, if video shows were to become available.

I think Art has said something about not wanting to be on a video feed. He does Periscope from time to time, but shoots from behind because he jokes about people not wanting to look at his "mug."

A video feed is largely a waste if there aren't a ton of visuals aside from talking heads. It's better posting any images to the web, in my opinion. Editing and uploading a 2.5 hour show, however simple, takes a good bit of processing time that could be better spent on guest prep or technology. Plus, how are you going to record the guest? Not everyone uses a webcam.

It's nice that people are trying to think of ways to boost member numbers, but I disagree that the lack of a video is keeping members away. Is someone honestly going to sit down and stare at the split screen for 2.5 hours?

If done right there wouldn't be any edits just do the two kinds of shows at once.

Do the standard audio show feed and at the same time record a video in 1/2 screen or even better shoot full screen to each person as they talk.
,
Hire a cute teenage intern to set things up each night and when the interview concludes upload the audio interview and also upload the video interview. So each should would have an audio version and a video version.

The difference would be like night and day when interviewing people with  disciplines like channeling and bi-locating.

Spend a few bucks on backdrop, a little on lighting then boom you got a video interview set.

My advice you the show is don't be laze. Test it out, show it to the public and see what they say.

My suggestion for an enjoyable interview that should be on video.

Have Art Bell lay down on a table and let this guy in the video do a channeling while he's using Art's Energy by moving his hands around Art,

That would be an instant Art Bell classic.

You know, this thread goes right to the heart of my issue with "Time Traveller"... the value argument of it. So many internet broadcasters do more for less. Joe Rogan was one of Art's guests (for some reason), and Rogan's show is completely free + has video + archives on are YouTube. Twit.TV, TheNerdist, RadioLab... these are the guys plowing the road for online-only broadcasting. They monetize their service through ad revenue, distribution, and sponsorship. Art Bell has a name, and has a built in audience, so I think he is comparable.

The value proposition must go up IMO. I freely record Art's show and many others, in an automated fashion, with free software and a 6yr old netbook. He offers open lines and infrequently uses the WormHole function on-air. So what exactly would I be paying $8 for?

I don't have a problem with people supporting Art Bell through $$$, in fact I think it is great if it makes them feel better. The flip-side is that MiTD is not a non-profit venture. The CapEx and OpEx of a podcast / livecast is easily figured. So preparing a plan to offset the OpEx, and creating a return schedule for the CapEx could lead one to a reasonable plan for ad revenue, distribution and sponsorship. Forecasting with or without TimeTraveller as a revenue stream would also be logical.

I hope Art stays at it for a little longer. I look forward to the Halloween show and the NYE show if he makes it that far. I'd also like to see something more for TimeTraveller. I know he is against additional ads, but he could just ditch the Dark Matter News segment which seems to go on for 5 mins and put ads in. I wouldn't care at all... hahaha. Ads pay for themselves and can be completely automated from a production standpoint.

Or maybe we could get small Pizza Punch bottles mailed to us after a years worth of subscription?

phrodo

Art hinted tonight that TT subs would be getting a huge perk in a couple of weeks. Video? I seriously doubt it. Pizza Punch?? One can only hope.

I agree with you about "Time Traveler" not being worth it.  How many shows are really worth listening to again that you need a monthly subscription. MiTD has more commercials than The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, JRE has sponsorship plugs at the very beginning of the show and at the end only. . His archives are Free on youtube with video. Joe doesn't do any cheesy News thing like MiTD does.

Caravan To Midnight uploads full shows once in awhile to Youtube with video. CTM not that popular, very few people if any seed it on torrent sites lol.

My guess is maybe they will give time travelers access to other shows on DMDN archives.  Pay for MiTD you can listen to Richards show archives. I don't think Richard has that many subscribers.

I think it's either this or access to Dreamland archives. Either one would be pretty cool!

Sorry folks, just don't see them doing video.

My guess is Dreamland archives. Art even played the Oh of Pleasure later the same night (I think) he made the announcement. I sure hope so -- I loved that show but the archives of it are substandard audio quality. Just not sure if Art has rights to them -- or if they were included in the sellout of C2C. I know he gave Dreamland to Whitley ... and would imagine Keith has high quality recordings of everything Art did.

More than well said +1 !!

Although I support Art via subscription, I agree that it's all about the value proposition to the customer/listener.

Clearly IMHO Art doesn't seem to be doing MITD just for "fun"...and understandably not to loose $$ while doing the show but for something more.

I am not sure that adding Dreamland to the service offering would add that much to any value proposition for subscribers, but that's just me.

paladin1991

In honesty, I rarely get to hear ART live.  So for me it's about listening later.  And I don't always finish all the shows.  Sometimes I think the show is good but the guest is shit.  Not anybody's fault, just some guests are not my cup of tea.  Or gin.

Wintermute

I'm not against anyone making money. In fact I am happy for those in arts & entertainment that can make a living. It's tough and there is a lot of pressure to make the old Faustian bargain; free performance for the exposure. The barrier to entry is so low in radio broadcasting and podcasting that the market is saturated and only the best, niche talent really do well. As another person above astutely pointed out, JRE has less ads than Art Bell (I didn't even think of that!) and Rogan does have a studio + a lot of other stuff that costs probably more overhead than MiTD. Heck Rogan broadcasts out of L.A.; compare that to Parhump or LAS in cost.

3000 Time Travelers: $5/mo = $15K/mo = $180K/yr.
1000 Time Travelers: $8/mo = $8K/mo = $96K/yr.

Revenue before tax: $276K/yr

In the end I'm happy Art's back. Why he has copied the C2C business model with less content, I can only assume to be a money grab to offset his initial capital outlay. But according to Art, he spent about $30K building his studio and services out. So his return schedule might be as low as 4 months after tax with the membership levels I assume above. Even at half that membership, you'd be looking at only 8 months.

I don't know Art's ad revenue. I have to think it is pretty solid. Plus "StreamGuys" front-loads every stream so I'd bet on a discount there because most professional streaming services never do that by default. Then we don't know $$$ revenue on terrestrial affiliates. Part-time producer wage. Web admin for the site which is probably Keith. I have think that by Xmas, Art Bell will be doing very, very well. My guess would be that he pays himself around $160K/yr with this structure... maybe more or less depending some CoB variables.

Dyna-X

I really don't think more perks need to be added, just the existing perks namely the wormhole be used more often.  From its position in Art's studio it seems to be an "out of sight, out of mind" kinda thing.   Perhaps if he set it up on a third laptop on his desk, he'd see it more, rather than something to peer at during breaks.

As the subscriber base grows he's talked of eliminating commercials or doing away with them entirely as a possibility, no argument there.

I do have an idea though that might be fun, a monthly raffle for some Time Travelers to get goodies like coffee mugs, keychains, mousepads and an autograph. Pick a different item each month.   Maybe 10 winners at a time.  That's just classic fun radio.

I have a new guess:

bumper music in the podcasts.

Yeah, I know what was said before about royalties and whatnot. That's why it's totally a guess.

ChairSpud

I think Art's big surprise will be the app for ios and Android to allow time travelers easy access to the archives. Not just downloading but streaming as well and maybe the wormhole too.

henge0stone

Art has bought back the entire Dreamland and C2C catalog and its now available for download, basically the only way I would become a premium membership.

I really hope this is one of the TBA perks.  This has been mentioned by different posters numerous times over a period of months, and Art's made no comment.  We're getting near that fester time of year, so the time is right.

lamr

I hope it's not added bumper music. I like the TT podcasts minus the filler. Hell, skip the Dark Matter news stuff too TBH. YMMV etc.

I find TT really good value. I can't listen live and I'm happy to subscribe to get me some Art Bell. Added archives would be nice.
