Well, since you ask, used to be, back in the day, the forum could not only inform when a user was "on", but also what thread they were looking at. It was a very good tool for trolls to focus their attention on the poster of their choice.

Ok, ok, ok, that particular feature has been tucked away for quite a while.

I stay hidden because... I see no reason not to stay hidden. My posts do not evaporate, anyone can respond at any time they choose. Whether I am hidden or not.

The only members I can think of that have a good reason to hide would be Dave and Flakie since they're both .. well .. you know. Otherwise - not everybody knows who you REALLY are -- well except MV, Art and Redacted but they don't have any reason to hide.
