Hoagland: You have said and written many times that construction glass on the Moon would be twice as strong as steel. In Dark Mission (p. 244, 2nd edn) you cite the following work in support:
J.C.Rowley and J.W. Neudecker: In Situ Rock Melting Applied to Lunar Base Construction (…etc)

However, Rowley and Neudecker write no such thing. Citing a work that does not support you is unacceptable in science and would certainly guarantee rejection by any peer-reviewed journal. You should be ashamed.

I can give you some figures from a different source:

Young’s modulus of lunar glass: 100 GPa, cf. alloy steel 224 GPa, terrestrial glass 68 GPa.
Ultimate tensile strength, alloy steel 2.3 GPa. For lunar glass, ultimate tensile strength is dependent on many factors especially temperature. Blacic gives a range of 0.007 â€" 3.0

In short, YOU ARE TOTALLY WRONG. Please issue a retraction.

So many disclaimers.  How is this different than guessing?

I actually respected the guest more for not overselling it.  Face it: everything with Hoagland is "remarkable" or (dare I say it?) "stunning," but the guest was fairly low-key and not trying to sensationalise what his group is trying to do.

Anyway, you are right in saying that all of this isn't much better than guessing.  The guest sounded enthusiastic about his limited successes, but it is obvious that this research has a long way to go before it produces anything of real use.
