That's the issue I would have with it. It's only 65 years old and we already have an example of a great ocean liner preserved, the Queen Mary. So it's not like we'd be losing a major artifact. It would be nice to preserve or repurpose it, but that would cost nearly a billion dollars. You could raise and conserve the damned Titanic for that kind of money.

QM is British, and a generation earlier.  UNITED STATES is representative of the zenith of American marine and industrial capability and design. Like the Apollo systems, it was all done with slide rules and reams of calculations. Much like the IOWA BBs; its like will never again be seen on Earth and it deserves preservation.  Letting it go to the breakers will be a major cultural loss but restoration and maintenance costs wold be astronomic. Even saving sections of the ship would be worthwhile.  The shame of is that we spend tons of money preserving absolute crap because a celebrity touched it.  They should spread a rumor that Elvis lost his virginity on board..donations would pour in.
