Could keep the cubesat in orbit indefinitely versus a few weeks.

How about you just provide the sales figures for the Altair compared to the Apple II. Then research if the company that makes them is still in business or not and then if Apple still is. Then maybe you could get a fucking clue.  ;D

Like as in providing some kind of propulsion to offset the orbit decay?

Bingo. To do the moon flight or go to a much higher orbit would require a lot of wattage.

The Altair was a kit that required soldering skills. It wasn't "Plug and Play", hence not commercially viable except to a niche group of DIYers.
The Woz put out a complete, ready to use system.  ;)


He can't help himself, got through about 2 hours before going full lunatic.

He has a working EM drive, now all he needs to do is glom on to somebody with a cube sat and then folks, up, down, anywhere - we're on to Pluto! Which he now also claims has ruins of a Type II civilization.

Ah I see.  Are there not however satellites that are just in high enough orbit, going fast enough, that they don't require such extra oomph?

They all decay no matter the altitude. Extra velocity will just raise the orbit or keep an orbit stable. Even the International Space Station requires a boost every few months.

When you get to altitudes of thousands of miles your cubesat will be up for hundreds to thousands of years. The lower the orbit the faster the decay rate.

That actually wouldn't be very hard to design. CO2 canisters that are commonly used in pellet guns could be used for  thrusters along with a gyro-compass, like is available on Android, for orientation, and an altimeter. A quick one second burst would probably be able to extend the operational time by quite a bit and the canisters wouldn't add much weight at all.  ;)



what's the oldest satellite still in operation and orbit and how can it last so long?

Nice ok thanks for the info.  Considering how much of my modern life depends on these things flying around I really should understand their basic principles better.
