A friend of mine introduced me to Dianetics in the mid '80's. I could see it was a scam back then. I can see why a lot of peeps got pulled in though. The book was written in a manner that made you want to check it out, but there was an underlying feeling (for me) of somethings' not quite right here.

Me too. Same time frame. There was also another book that had a blue cover.  Self-analyses maybe? Anyway.... It had a bunch of tests an questionnaires in it.  I glanced through it and gave it back.

I had a close call or two with what I call a "cult lite".  One seemed totally chill for the first couple meetings, kind of a modern non-denominational kinda deal, but then on like the third visit they all got glazed eyes and started asking me to come play volleyball with them.
