Okay it looks like several of us are moving to Idaho.  I thought I would start this thread so that we wouldn't be filling the ART BELL thread with Idaho talk.  We all know the AB thread should be filled with butt hurt and angst instead of talk of AB right?

If/when I move back, I'm thinking about Emmett, ID - just north of Boise.

The climate and conservative culture sounds attractive.  I'd like to find a cooler, drier climate w/o freezing to death in the Winter.

I a went up to ID in March for 5 days to scout out Coeur d'Alene.  I have the chance to transfer to another company outlet in Spokane.  As some may be aware, it's about a 30 minute drive fm CDA to Spokane, fair weather, of course.  I am taking the family up for 10 days this month.

So that they can fall in love with it like I did.  It's been running in the hi 80's low 90's temp wise, so they missed the cold.  Looking for some land that I can homestead, the wife and kids deserve a better life.  Wife is a bit concerned about the Aryan Bro types that are still around.  Being German, she despises them. 

Funny thing, when I went up there, somebody must have called ahead.  Didn't see a one.  Course, not everybody wears the 'look.'  When folks found out I was looking to re-locate, they were very friendly and apologetic for the 'unpleasantness of the AB thing.    Seems they feel they were improperly painted with that brush.

I understand that.  But there is an increasing number of folks, military, cops, just plain folks, who want to be left alone and they are moving to the American Redoubt.    The PNW. 

So whereabouts are folks moving to and looking at? 

General, maybe there's the chance we can link up now and again once we get established.

Well the winters can be pretty brutal in North and Southeast Idaho.
The Southwest is a better place for milder winters.  Boise is a beautiful city.

I'm looking at moving up to Moscow (Idaho) for a year to turn some contacts into customers and get some work done. Too many distractions in Southern California.

Also, I want to pursue my lifelong dream of snowmobile ownership.

North Idaho wouldn't be my choice, though.

I had a bookmark somewhere of the county land auctions in Idaho. McCall, ID had one a few months back and land was being auctioned off at reasonable prices. McCall is beautiful. When I find the link of the final sale prices, I will post it here.

I will check out those resources.  I have a realtor working for me 'up there.'  She and her family lived down here.  Her hubby was LASO. 

I found them on a PBS show.  Can't remember the title but the interveiwer is Mary Hinojosa.  Not sure I got the spelling right.  The episode was entitled 'Private Idaho.'  I think it's still available on PBS for a free viewing.

Her name is Kim Boland btw.  Just in case you need someone to chat with about land and homes in the CDA area.

You might be surprised by the amount of cool(er) climes within a 40 minute drive from downtown Tucson. Oracle and Summerhaven are good examples, the latter being generally pricey, but beautiful.

I love Priest Lake region but you can be looking forward to being snowed in so have a snowmobile etc. East Washington has some benefits, in that no State income tax, but politically is now being out-voted by Seattle areas so gun rights, taxes, regulations, etc are getting worse. All of the "inland empire" is also being changed as people move there (damned Californians try to ruin everywhere they go it seems  and also drive up real estate prices) and rich people are buying up land. (I've heard the Chinese also buying up land in Idaho but further south.) And then you got good people heading up to the great American NW Redoubt as the country is turning to crap and the borders remain open (lots of police head up there after retirement.) Ideally you want to try to find a parcel that is adjacent to national forest land or similar because you are, unless there are drastic changes, expanding your opportunities to hike, hunt, snowmobile, ride your horse, etc and less chances of some developer, resort, dotcom zillionaire, Hollyweird star building something near you.

Good luck! I hope you find a nice property to all who are moving there. Such beautiful country but get outside the city and remember....it is still pretty wild and rural. Don't call the friggin' police because there is an animal in your yard!

Oh, yeah, I've been to those places, AB, even in August.  You're right about being cooler but they're a little too "rustic" for me, plus the concern with forest fires and, as you mentioned, a little pricey.

Been to Sierra Vista a number of times.  Really love that area, especially the  Huachucas and the canyons.  I wish it was just a little closer to Tucson.

The Coeur d'Alene area as my company is opening a second outpost in Spokane, Wa.  CDA is a resort town.  Summer activities due to lakes, mountains numerous hiking trails.  CDA hosts an Iron Man the weekend of the 25th, this June.  I understand that there is usually winter skiing as well.  Not this year though, no snow.  Wet, 'warm' winter.
Of course, 40 degrees warm is relative, right?  Here in the PRC, sur, that's cold.

North Idaho is fairly well populated for as remote and rural it is.  In the CDA area there are numerous small towns, as you are probably aware. After the megapolis of the the lower PRC, it will be rather .... open. 

The fam is looking fwd to it.  We leave on Monday, the 15th of June.    Know that I will be reporting in this thread.  And hell, I'll even report it in the Felchie thread.  He is probably interested in what happens with other folks, right?

I have some small concern about weather.  An even smaller concern about the Neo-Nazi influence that seemed to establish itself there through the latter part of the last century.

I've lived in snow in the military.  Winter warfare training.  Longest I spent was 6 weeks in very fucking cold Norwegian winter for an 'Operation Reforger' mission. 
Living in it day in and day out will be a different thing all together.  But the wife is German and CDA is at the 47 Latitude, her home is in the 48 Lat in Die Heimat.  But fm our research, the weather patterns will be very similiar to what she grew up with.
Her biggest concern is the remaining Neo Nazi influence.  Although German, like many of her generation she suffers fm no cultural guilt, but becomes enraged by that shit.  Her family was Catholic during WWII and as such, only her Grandmother, father and few distant cousins survived.

I'm not worried about the NN's or whatever they call themselves these days.  It's just one gang.  Down here, there's a different gang on just about every street corner.
