Evacuate Earth?

And to think that there are undoubtedly planets in this galaxy that are 12 billion years old.   If even one of them harbored intelligent life...   

My son keeps talking to me about the sun and how it's going to "gobble up the earth" and we go over scenarios about leaving this planet and where we would go.   Just to imagine humanity a single billion years from now is such a mind fuck.

It's definitely food for thought..........

I'd previously watched this one when it aired on Nat Geo some time ago.  Was pretty amazed how much thought has already been put into the idea.  Would be an interesting if dark topic for radio/podcast.

I haven't read the Gene Wolfe book, but there's something in your post that caught my eye. I haven't thought or discussed my concept since '93 0r '95. I believe that a case can be made for the research and development of what I have monikered "Back Pack Babies".

It would be a totally autonomous system. A back pack like device would serve as an artificial womb that could carry a fetus to maturity. I began really thinking about such a device when I came across some published reports about the world wide population, for a paper I was doing. The numbers clearly show and predict that around the year 2035 all populations on this planet will begin having a negative growth rate. There will be more deaths from both natural and unnatural deaths. More deaths than births will dwindle away the dynamics of DNA. If in fact this negative birth rate begins to happen it will take on a snowball effect. The gene pool will diminish to the point where there will be no human autonomic defenses to combat viruses and diseases which will replicate and overtake the human ability to fight off viruses; which will magnify HIV ( human immunodeficiency virus) a hundred, or maybe even a thousand fold.

The Back Pack Baby idea would allow for humans to continue to produce offspring in a completely sterile environment as long as there are egg and sperm donors. The device itself (the Back Pack) could be carried around, to term, by either of the sexes just like they would carry around a "Back Pack". Forward looking will require humans to begin to develop technologies that could sustain both sperms and eggs for ex vivo  fertilization and implantation.

I believe that something similar to this would have to be developed in the eventuality that the radiation from the Sun will penetrate Earth's natural defenses and expose both males and females to radiation that will render them both infertile. That is not to rule out things such as human warfare doing the same thing.

I watched a couple of episodes of that program and found that it didn't push my imaginings to the limits that they could've been pushed to.

I'm sure that there are numerous programs about space and time that I've either not yet heard of, nor viewed.
