XL Pipeline

How did a pipeline become such a cause celebre and so political? I know the Republicans use it to show how Obama hates the energy industry and the Democrats use it to try to shore up the base of environmentalists but it seems so ridiculous. Is not like there are not other pipelines. Where are the environmentalists protesting them? And why aren't they concerned with the dangers involved with shipping it by rail? I've heard rumors of big donors having interests in rail transport and that is a reason. But why is Obama involved at all? At what point does Obama think private people, States, Congress, or businesses can have some semblance of decision-making and freedom? Is there nothing that doesn't need to be decreed, controlled, or examined by Obama? And why did the State Dept make a study of the XL pipeline in the first place? Shouldn't that be, if anyone, the Dept of Interior?

I thought his veto was hilarious.

No fan of Obama myself, he's as much a shill to money as Bush was, but the fact that the Right has some kind of major, major OCD, where they have to react like hysterical bitches about every single thing he does,  as though parting his hair.. if it were the sort of hair that could be parted... on the wrong side is a betrayal of America.

I guess at this point he just doesn't give a fuck, because he knows that regardless of what he does it'll get a melodramatic negative reaction, so he just whips out his veto with a grin on his face and watches everyone on the Right piss their knickers in sheer fury.

It is clear Obama doesn't "give a fuck" about the county but I just wonder why all the brouhaha over this particular pipeline? I'm wondering if the company and people who want it just rename it it would probably pass no problem. There are other pipelines and Obama hasn't shut them down (yet) and you don't have Republicans praising them (or environmentalists protesting them.)

Because Obama supporter Warren Buffet owns the railroad cars that are carrying the oil in lieu of the pipeline.  it's always about money with the corporatists.

I support Keystone for many of the reasons you mention and I also agree with you it isn't that big a deal either way.
Two things:

The U.S Department of Energy has signed off on the biggest expansion of oil production in probably 50 years with fracking.

I want to say some ports (Tacoma?) also offloading lots of coal to China delivered via rail. Cheap, China has lots of empty ships for the flip-side trip and Obama has been taking coal-burning plants offline with his regulations per his promises to kill the industry.
